I lived at 510 Buchanan. Streets West of Broadway were named in the order the Presidents were elected. Watch out for Roosevelt and Roosevelt Place in Toleston. I lived at 1205 Roosevelt Place. Streets East of Broadway were named in order of the states as they entered the Union. Lake Michigan was 1st avenue. The avenues run all the way south through Merrillville to the Old Lincoln Highway. Could someone tell me if Buchanan Street was in North, east, south, or west part of Gary. Le
West side, from 200-4900 South, but nearly everything is south, so this street never had a north address. 13 blocks west of Broadway (Hway 53). ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected].com> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, May 24, 2003 4:40 PM Subject: [INLAKE] Gary Indiana > Could someone tell me if Buchanan Street was in North, east, south, or west > part of Gary. > > Le > > > ==== INLAKE Mailing List ==== > Check out Firstmom's Genealogy Resources & Records! I was out today and wandered into the Remarkable Book Shop, a little book store thats in the Strack's Plaza at 73rd and Taft in Merrillville. He occasionally, but somewhat rarely, has books of local interest, but right now he has 2 very good books in stock with local flair....and LOTS of people pictures. Everything from classroom pictures to church groups and sports, some wonderful pictures of Gary in the early days. Unfortunately, no indexes in either book, so no way to do lookups from them without going through every page. They're new, so I assume recently published. But here's the info if anyone is interested. "Images of America - The Polish Community of Gary" $18.99 "Images of America - Gary's East Side" $19.99 You can order from him through email, he can give you the details of how to go about it. Don't reply and ask me anything, I've told you all I know about the books. Contact Ken at [email protected]

I'm looking for information on the family of Elias Crane and Rebecca J. McHenry. They were married in Winfied, Lake Co on Aug 12 1855. I haven't been able to find them on the census for either 1850 or 1860. I know that my great grandmother was born in Michigan City, LaPorte Co in 1862, but have never been able to place her with her parents on any census. Her death certificate lists her parents as Elias Crane and Emma McHenry, but I think they may have been wrong about the mother's first name. I've found Rebecca's brothers, John W, Caleb and David all living in Winfield in 1860, along with her mother, Elizabeth, but have not been able to find her. Any help would be appreciated. Leslie
