1. [INLAKE] East Chicago Historical Society & Genealogy Gene
2. Well, I have finally found where I got the genealogy/history bug! I knew there was a strain of genealogy fever in the family because a cousin has it too...her son travels for a living and is made to stop at places like the vital records offices in England and Wales! But it goes back further than them. People ask "so when did you get into genealogy?" and I had thought about that for a couple years....finally I remembered that as a child I would look through the phone book for my last name and call people at random. It's an uncommon name, so I only annoyed "family" in this way... I found my uncle George Huish listed and would call him often after that...I was maybe 11 yrs old. I was looking for family ties early on....now the other day at the library I found the connection with him...just wish he hadnt passed away years ago, I could've learned so much! >From a book about East Chicago's History: "Until the 60s, most residents of the Twin Cities paid scant attention to their community's history because many of them had lived through it. Faced with it's 75th anniversary, however, a group of local citizens formed the East Chicago Historical Society, whose Founders' meeting was held May 26, 1968. (EXACTLY 2 weeks before I was born, to the day!) Officers elected at the meeting are shown here. In the front row were Rose LeVan, historian; Melvin Specter, secretary; GEORGE HUISH, PRESIDENT; and Ezelyn Johnston, board member. In the back row were Paul Zahara, treasurer; Dan Simon, board member; Hubert H. Hawkins, secretary of the Indiana Historical Society; and Willard Van Horne, Jr., vice president. Missing were Mrs. H. E. Zoeger, third vice president; William Riley, first vice president; and board members Colonel Walter J. Riley, Mayor John Nicosa, M.D., Robert L. Smith; G. Galvan; W. M. Young; Hans Peterson; Margaret Jones; A. P. Davis; and John Fox." http://members.aol.com/anolelady/echist.jpg (PHOTO) So I guess it was some kind of fate for me to appreciate my family's and local towns histories. I'm trying to pass it on to my daughters, ages 15 and 8, and they do love hearing about ancestors, and seeing the collection of family pictures I have dating back to the 1800s, they seem very intrigued by "the old days" and what our predecessors lives were like...so maybe someday they will carry on everything that George somehow passed on to me. 3. I have had a request from an elderly cousin who has no access to a computer. In fact, she gets the sweats even thinking about turning one on. She has been thinking about a friend of hers from a very long time ago and would like to make contact with her or her family. All the information she could remember, during a short conversation last night before she left town is as follows. Now remember we are talking a long time ago and memories sometimes are cloudy with time and age. I am only relaying information she remembers, as she remembers them, that might help someone recognize this lost friend. She is looking for a Myrtle, maiden name unknown who married a Joseph Grimmer. Myrtle would have been born sometime around 1920. Before she married Joe, circa mid-to late 1940's, Myrtle worked in an establishment in Calumet City as what could be described as an exotic dancer, going by the stage name of Lee, or something like that. This is where she met Joe. When they married she left dancing, became a very religious Pentacostal church goer. Myrtle and Joe had at least two daughters. Donna Jo born c.1948 and Nanette born c. 1950 both in Indiana; possibly in or around Lake Co., IN. During the years around 1952 to 1956 she lived in the East Gary area, and was a seamstress making wedding gowns. During the years from 1956 to unknown they had moved to Miller, IN; sometime after that and before 1971 they might have moved to either Idaho or Nebraska. It had been said to my cousin that Myrtle was living in Phoenix area in 1971. She was also told, years ago, that Joe had been killed in an auto accident. She does not know when or where. My cousin AND Myrtle apparently have been moving around alot and lost contact with each other many, many years ago. If any one knows Myrtle or her children, please contact me so I can put my cousin in touch. By the way, does anyone remember such establishments in Calumet City where exotic dancing and the like went on - probably late 1930's or early 1940's? Thanks, so much for any help. They started playing the junk movies that attracted trouble instead of families...that was their demise! These movie makers need to see that the kids movies sell, and they have whole isles at walmart for the marketing of the toys from them. I think 49'er drive-in just over the border in porter county is going to end up the same way. Their commercials talk about the playground and bringing the kids...and then they play all R rated films. I won't take my kids, even my 15 yr old, to any of that stuff. Ok...Im getting way off topic. 2. They have the Y&W Drive-in listed, and a few other areas in northwest indiana. Kathy Lost Indiana http://www.in.net/~mcdonajp/lostindiana/index.html As the classic Tin Pan Alley song says, "When I dream about the moonlight on the Wabash, then I long for my Indiana home." Created and maintained by John McDonald, a local historian and photographer, this Web site is a tribute to the lost and disappearing landscapes and sites that are important parts of Indiana legend and lore. The site contains a number of profiles of disused and abandoned structures around the state, such as the massive Sheraton Hotel in downtown Gary, and the former Market Square Arena in Indianapolis. One particularly fun feature of the site is a profile of the Crown Hill cemetery in Indianapolis, which is the third largest public cemetery in the United States, and the last resting place of Benjamin Harrison and Edward Black, the youngest person to serve in the Union Army. The site concludes with a selection of other relevant links to other sites, including the Historic Landmarks Foundation of Indiana and the National Trust for Historic Preservation. --------------- Firstmom's Genealogy Resources http://khuish.tripod.com/ Lake County IN GenWeb http://www.rootsweb.com/~inlake
