    1. [INLAKE] Lauerman's grocery 1944
    2. Cheri Vanden Berg
    3. The Hammond Times Wednesday December 6, 1944 NOW TO REST THOSE FEET! [Original article had a picture with the caption: Hammond Grocer Waiting on Last Customer) When you start in the grocery business your best friends are your feet. When you've walked 10,000 miles in 30 years, your best friends still are your feet, but you can't blame 'em if they begin to look at you a bit reproachfully as if to say, " Gee mister, ain't it time to go easy!" And you realize your left foot hasn't been treated right and the right is getting badly left, and you know the gag is corny But so are the feet. That's how Emil LAUERMAN felt yesterday when he served his last customer in his grocery at 5739 Calumet avenue, Hammond. He is selling his IGA establishment to Earl DELL, a photographer and plans to retire to his home in Chicago and rest his weight elsewhere. Lauerman started in the grocery business in 1914 and began learning about human nature (and human feet) right away. In 1926 he moved to his present Calumet avenue quarters and of course had to move his feet with him. He figures roughly that he has tramped nearly half way around the world in the course of his daily work in the store. Lauerman lives in Chicago with his wife and five duaghters. The latter are: Mrs. Evelyn Brady, Lorraine, Marian, Phyllis and Virginia. His son Wallace is serving with the navy in Leyte as a machinists mate first class on an LST. _________________________________________________________________ Add fun gadgets and colorful themes to express yourself on Windows Live Spaces http://clk.atdmt.com/MSN/go/msnnkwsp0070000001msn/direct/01/?href=http://www.get.live.com/spaces/features

I found mention of this work in a brief biographical entry reprinted on a web site. I subsequently searched World Cat with no luck then tried Heritage Quest and Ancestry LE to see what I could find. I did find a couple of articles in PERSI related to the Julian family and another biographical entry for Isaac H. in ALE but nothing referred to that history of the two families.... I doubt that you are going to find a publication by this name in any "normal" library. Perhaps in the historical society of the county (Wayne, Indiana?) where these families were located. I find just two primary references to this publication when I do a google search. In one, the phrase outline history of the Julian and Hoover families is used without italics or quote marks, serving (IMHO) only as a description of something written by this author. In the other, 'Outline History of the Julian and Hoover Families' appears in quotes, an editorial style sometimes used for, for example, a magazine article. Has your patron participated in the HOOVER online discussion group? See < http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~desloan/> for some commentary on this group. 1. Re: [INLAKE] Marriage licenses July 17,1917
    2. Thanks, Cheri, for these several items of great interest (and especially for the photo of Jim in Fargo!) I have only one Depa in my database, your mother, so I'll need to know more about the family structure, but it's pretty obvious that John was her father and that she had several siblings, including Stanley. The obit for Nell Cosgrove Lauerman is very helpful. Luckily my mother escaped the flu even though she was intimately involved, as I understand it, with the care of the children. No doubt they were all quarantined, and of course Emil was too sick to attend her funeral...a very sad time for the family but similar stories across the nation. I went hiking with some friends this morning in the Coachella Valley Preserve, which is a wonderful area along the San Andreas Fault northeast of the community of Thousand Palms, just north of I-10 and the city of Palm Desert. The low this morning was about 60, but I'm sure by the time we began our hike, it was at least 70, as we were very comfortable in light clothing. Although there isn't anything spectacular to see in the way of desert plants after the long, hot summer, it was obvious that there had been some rain from the occasional thunderstorms that had passed through (very spotty), as many of the plants and shrubs did have blossoms and looked quite healthy. Hope we get good rains this winter (and not too severe at any one time, since those terrible brush fires have stripped the ground of vegetation in so many areas, and the result will certainly be mudslides and probable flooding). We were back by 10:30, just a good first hike, since we're all a bit out of condition! (I feel that I could take a good nap!) When I got back to the house, I sort of wound down by doing a few more chores in the yard, trimming some plants in the back and cutting the spent flowering stalks from the twin yuccas in front (as well as taking out some of the many wild palm seedlings that are always sprouting here and there). Dennis was right, as I'm sure it will hit 91 by this afternoon! Again, thanks! I hope I can figure out more about the Cosgroves with Nell's obit... Love, Paul
