Scheffler was born July 30,1857,near Greensburg,in Summitt Co.,O,.He came to Wolcottville with his parents in October 1864,where he spent the greater part of his youngman-hood days. In the fall of 1882, in company with his friend,David Shaefer(who proceded him to the spirit world several years ago)he went to Holdrege,Neb. During his stay at Holdrege he was married to Cora Samples on November 16,1890, who with their only son,Russell, are bereft of husband and father. He was converted during the revival meetings at this place in 1882 and at the same time united with the Evangelical Association,of which body he remained a faithful and earnest worshiper until his recent removal to Streator,Ill.,where he and his wife united with the Presbyterian church. Three weeks ago he was stricken with his fatal illness which baffled all medical skill and amid the constant, faithful and tenderest care he obeyed the Messenger's voice and in sweet peace sank to rest on Tuesday evening,January 3,1899, at the age of 41 years,5 months and three days. He was a man of excellent character and habits, with deep religious convictions, strictly honest and just in all his dealings, which gained the admiration of all with whom he associated. His unassuming life and perfect trust in his God is worthy of our emulation. "Someday, I know not when 'twill be, The angel death will call for me; But this I know, if Christ be near, Old Jordan's waves I will not fear." For surely--- He giveth his beloved sleep until that time When Gabriel's resounding thorugh triumphal skies. Shall summon the to wake again. The funeral was conducted from the Evangelical Church on last Friday by Revs.Hofferbert and F.L.Snyder before a large congregation of sympathizing friends. The pall-bearers were his four remaining brothers and two brothers-in-law, A.McCormick and J.D.Raber. His remains rest,as was his request,by the side of his mother in Woodland Cemetery.
