My ggtGrandfather, Solomon Puffer left Ontario Co., NY with his younger brother Charles in 1854 with their families. Solomon's wife was Clarissa Carolyn (Lown) Puffer. Solomon and Clarissa had 4 children. Ira bn. 1846, Mary bn. 1848, Solomon bn.1850 and Hiram bn. 1853. Somewhere between 1853 and 1860, Clarissa dies. 1860 census shows the family living in the home of the Hodder family who is no relation, with no Clarissa. This was in Johnson Twp. Living in the Erastus Nelson home in Clear Springs Twp. is his family and Hiram is counted amongst this family also. Arvilla, the woman of the home is the sister of Solomon. The Nelsons are buried in the Sloan Cemetery and I have that information on them. But where is Clarissa buried? It is only my assumption that Hiram being the baby needed mothering after the death of his mother and Solomon allowed him to live with his Aunt for a bit. Solomon and his family were living in Constantine, St. Joe Co. MI by 1863 where he married his 2nd wife before moving to Muskegon Twp, MI where he died in 1880 of Consumption. Here Hiram as a parent started the first school of the township in his living room. This was called "Hiram's School". When his home became too small to use as a school, a schoolhouse was built on his property and this became known as 'Puffer School". In 1934 Puffer School merged with Reeths School and became known as Reeths-Puffer School District. Today it is one of the biggest schools in the county. I am hoping that someone who has knowledge and/or can talk to the keeper of cemetery's can maybe find out if Clarissa is buried somewhere in that county. Any help, even death records of some kind would be of help. I even wonder if maybe some of her Lown family moved to IN with them. I would so very appreciate anything anyone can do. Warm Regards, June L. Beckwith
