Hi List, Hope someone can help me find my Chiddisters, looking for Jeremiah H. Chiddister suppose to be living in Indiana 1851 son Commadore P. Chiddister born in 1853 Topeka area but can not find him in the 1860 census. Also had a dau Sarah born 1854 Noble County who married Jacob B. Rink. Any help on this family would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. Sandra
I've collected bits and pieces of history in my 20 year search for Anson CLARK and his son William David CLARKE, b. 1859 (that's a blatant advertisement). I have a historical atlas that indicates that Indiana was settled from the south up. The arrival of the Dutch in Elkhart Co., next door, for example, wasn't until 1853. The county itself was created in 1832, from parts of Elkhart and Allen Counties. Before that, the whole northeastern part of the state was Wayne Co. The Indiana GenWeb site has an excellent county history, written by our moderator, I believe. It says the first settlement was in 1828 just west of Lima at Big Squaw Village. 1829 brought a trading post to Lima. Jesse Huntsman was among the first settlers of Van Buren Township shortly thereafter. Founding dates, of course, are put as far back as possible by later proud citizens. Bloomfield was "founded" in 1833, but its first church (1835) had only 5 members! The county clerk told me their records for any township only date back to 1882. I've crawled through the 1850, 1860, and 1870 censuses for Lagrange Co. The older settlers seem to be primarily from NY. My ancestor Olmstead LEWIS came from Erie Co., NY between 1838 and 1840, settling first in Greenfield (1840) then Bloomfield (1850) before moving south into Noble Co. (1860). The Erie Co. people suggest a boat trip to Toledo and overland from there. Olmstead had one daughter I haven't been able to name or trace; so I've looked into the background of all the wives from NY in the 1850 census where possible. I get a variety of NY counties. The majority married their husbands, if not in NY, in OH. Someone else suggested a combination of the Erie Canal and a railroad through OH. All those OH marriages support the idea of at least a brief stop in that state. One interesting note. At least 30% of the people in the 1850 census aren't there in 1860. These are young families. A few I've traced either to KS, NE, or WI. I believe my Anson CLARK married Emily (LEWIS) LADD (another plug) and moved to WI. Lagrange Co., like Geauga Co., OH, appears to be a pit stop on the westward migration trail. Hope this keeps the HUNTSMAN hopefuls at bay. Aloha, Kathleen PS: Do check the GenWeb site for the full history, much clearer than my writing.
As a Huntsman researcher, I keep getting sent all this information on the family sent to me, with claims that many of them were born in LaGrange, Indiana, in the 1770s. This information is always completely undocumented, and I just wonder if anyone could help me out. I did a little checking and it appears that the first settlement in LaGrange was in about 1825 or so, so it doesn't sound reasonable to suppose this family was here, producing children, in the 1770s. To top it all off, the very ones born there are said to have died in PA....sort of a "backward" migration....as I know nothing of Indiana history, I hope someone can comment on the above possibilities. It's been awhile since I'm participated in this list. I'd like to repost my quest. I'm searching for information on two people. The first is Emily LEWIS. This is what I think I know about her: Olmstead LEWIS, b. 1799-1800, NY probably mother or grandmother was an OLMSTEAD/OLMSTED res. 1830, Clarence, Erie, NY res. 1840, Greenfield, Lagrange, IN res. 1850, Bloomfield, Lagrange, IN res. 1860, Perry, Noble, IN 1st wife's name unknown, d. 1840-1850, Lagrange m. Wait (male), b. abt. 1829, NY, living with father in 1850, gone in 1860, does not appear in the 1860 IN census index anywhere. Robert, b. abt. 1835, NY, with father in 1850, not 1860. I do not find a likely candidate in the 1860 IN census. George, b. abt 1838, NY, with father in 1850, not 1860, not likely candidate in 1860 IN census. Lafayette, b. 1840-1, Lagrange, with father in 1860; m. 12 Aug 1866, Noble Co., Emeline REYNOLDS. Not in any IN census index thereafter. Candidates in AL in 1870 & TX in 1880. The other person is Anson CLARK, Emily Lewis' husband. I find no trace of Anson CLARK in Indiana, except for one down in Sullivan, then Vigo Co. who is definitely not my fellow. The closest I come is a 25 year old laborer in the 1850 census of Hancock Co., IL, who lists his birthplace as Indiana. But which CLARKS were his parents? I've been looking for Anson for 20 years; so any assistance will be greatly appreciated. Aloha, Kathleen Choi

Of many LIBEY families that follow, I have more info than I have listed and will gladly share and am interested in any info I can obtain (descending or ascending) -- particularly in info on the William and Elizabeth ? LIBEY family. They had several children in Richland County during 1830s/1840s. According to family history (I have all spouses/offspring for many generations), William was born in PA in 1816 (Cumberland Co? or Perry?) and died in DeKalb Co., IN in 1849. William and Elizabeth had the following children: Margaret (Peggy) LIBEY b: 1835 OH; George E. LIBEY b: 1838, Richland Co., OH; David D. LIBEY b: 1840, Richland Co., OH; Mary Ann LIBEY b: 1842 Richland Co., OH; Jacob Ora LIBEY b: 1844 Richland Co., OH; Rachel LIBEY b: 1846 Richland Co., OH; and Elizabeth LIBEY b: 1849 DeKalb Co., IN. William may have been a son of John and Polly FOHT LIBEY (and John may be a son of George and Eve Dunkel Libey). Info on some of John and Polly's children follows: Catherine LIBEY b: 1818 PA married Philip SHAMBOUGH in Richland Co, OH in 1841; Susan LIBEY b: 1820 PA married Daniel BURROUGHS in Williams Co, OH in 1843; John Frederich LIBEY married Elizabeth RICHEY in Williams Co, OH in 1843; Simon LIBEY b: 1828 PA; Benjamin LIBEY b: 1830 PA married Lucy Ferguson in Lenawee Co., MI in 1853; Lucy Ann LIBEY b: 1832 PA married John LOSEY in Lenawee Co., MI in 1853; and Sarah LIBEY b: 1838 OH (Richland Co, OH ?) married Howland Ferguson in Lenawee Co., MI in 1854. Not listed is Margaret LIBEY who married George LIBEY in PA - they moved to MI , near her relatives, in the 1850s (also have much info on their offspring....). Another (probably related) LIBEY (extended) family can be found travelling in the same counties at the same times. George LIBEY b: 1786 in PA married Margretta ? b: 1792. They had the following children: William b: ABT1813, Maria b; ABT1814, John L. b: ABT1816, Margaret E. b: ABT 1817, Jacob S. b: ABT1818, and Isabelle b: 1828. Particulars on the offspring of the preceding sentence follow: William and Lucinda ?
