I have been researching my Amish Mennonite roots for about a year now and I requested an 1880 census soundex for my great grandfather Michael Stutzman. He and his family traveled quite a bit and has been a challenge tracing his moves. Anyway the 1880 census lists him as living in Lagrange Co., Van Buren Twp., city of Van Buren. I read in the history of Lagange Co. that the town of Van Buren later became Scott. Was Scott still referred to in 1880 as Van Buren or could the census taker be in err? Also is there a link or a description for the location of Van Buren Twp.? One more, does anyone know of any Amish Mennonite settlements or Meetinghouses in this area?
This is a real shot in the dark. I have an 1884 obituary for Barnet Terhune. He was from Henry County, Indiana, but the obit says he died at his daughter's (no name) in Scott, LaGrange County. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Charlene
With the holidays behind us and New Years Resolutions in the forefront I am taking this opportunity to encourage each of you to consider transcribing a Census for the very worthwhile USGENWEB Census Project. This Project is a non Profit group of volunteers dedicated to providing FREE Transcribed Census Records on the Internet at the USGENWEB Census Project page. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgw/census/states.htm While I know the cost of a CD. (about $20.00) is not always possible for everyone. There are other ways of helping such as Proof Reading. Please consider helping us in the year just starting. I am looking for the name of the church where Elder C. H. Blanchard performed a marriage ceremony in LaGrange County, IN, June 1873. Would there be a church register of marriages and births? Does the LaGrange County Historical Society have an email address? Barbara
I am hoping that someone who subscribes to this mailing list can help us. My sister-in-law is researching her family and I am trying to help her. We have gotten as far as James Adelbert Reynolds. We got his dearth certificate from DeMoines Co. Iowa. He moved there two years before he past away. His wife was Mary Jane ??? His birth date was 2 Aug. 1861 and death date was 6 Feb 1941. He lists his birthplace as Milford, Lagrange Co. IN. His parents were William Reynolds b. Indiana and Elizabeth Schimkagust b. unknown. Elizabeth's last name was difficult to read and had some letters written over. The informant was John H. Reynolds of Chillicothe, IL. We are having to do this long distance as we live in Tennessee. Any help anyone can give us is greatly appreciated. Thank you, Doris Melton

Hello, I am the new State Coordinator for the Indiana Census Project and would like to urge each of you to consider transcribing a Census. I along with about a million other Genealogists would Thank you. Our Project was started by volunteers of The USGenWeb Project, to transcribe all of the US Federal Census' and upload them to the Internet where they will be available in a searchable archive for all, for FREE. We provide our volunteer transcribers with either a database Program, for census years 1850 and 1860, that has been written exclusively for this Project, or a spreadsheet template for all other years. Our programmer is writing updates that will eventually include all other years. For MAC users we have a Coordinator who specializes in MAC's and she will get you the templates you need. At this time we are unable to provide our transcribers with a copy of the census for the county they wish to transcribe. Each of you must obtain your own copy of the census you sign up for. You will be volunteering your time to transcribe and you will be volunteering the acquisition of the census information. This information can be acquired on CD or in book form. Please consider helping this worthwhile project. Best wishes Sandra USGENWEB Census Project Maryland State Coordinator Indiana State Coordinator Traces of the Past http//www.geocities.com/Heartland/Valley/7259
I hope some of these are yours! I have a ton of them on my CDs. Too many to send. I tried to pick a variety. Who's ahead of them? It might help to pin one down! Hi- I am looking for any BERKHEISERS and their relatives. Several Berkheisers moved to Indiana from Pennsylvania in the early 1800s. Other possible names in the early family are Johannes and Elizabeth Beyer and Johannes and Susanna Miller. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Gregory
I'm off to see the grandchildren soon; so I'll be unsubscribing for a couple weeks. I'll let everyone know when I'm back.

One writer requested information abou the Central Christian Advocate of the United Methodist Church (formerly the Methodist Episcopal Church). The request appeared at the same time that I received a reply from a very helpful woman of the North Indiana Conference of the UMC. I was trying to locate records of a Methodist Church in Wolcottville. For us both, the answer is probably the same: - ------------------------------------------ "Your note was forwarded on to me about searching for your great- grandfather at Wolcottville or LaGrange. "The place to check would be the Archives of Indiana United Methodism at DePauw University, Greencastle, IN 46135. The phone number is 317-658-4406. Records back as far as you need them would be kept there. "Good luck in your search!" - ------------------------------------------ Now, does anyone know whether DePauw is online? Coralie J. OK this ISN"T specific to LaGrange Co, but does anyone know where this periodical was published? Apparently published by the M.E. church, and frequently contained obits and other data of genealogical interest. I have ancestors throughout OH,IN and IL who were Methodist Episcopal, and who reportedly had obits pulished in the Advocate(I can give specific dates), but where would I find copies? Hello, Iam looking for anyone with information on the RUSCO family that lived in LaGrange Co. about 1860. Alfred and Rachel RUSCO moved to LaGrange from Iowa and I was told the lived near MASON and HAND Relatives. In response to a query in the Noble County list, here's some useful information for all four counties. I've copied this to the Noble, LaGrange and Steuben county lists, but am not a member of the DeKalb county list so I cannot post there. there.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ - ------------------------------ Two compilations of historical information include Noble County. One is: "Counties of Lagrange and Noble, Historical and Biographical". 441+502 pages (F. A. Battey: 1882) reprinted 1993 by the HIgginson Book Company in Salem, MA and selling for $95--as of a few years ago. The second is: "History of Northeast Indiana: Lagrange, Steuben, Noble & DeKalb Counties." ed. by Ford, Stevens, McEwen & McIntosh. 2 vols. 612+463 pages. Originally published in 1920, reprinted by the Higginson Book Company in Salem, MA and selling for $105. What's fun about the second one is that Noble and Lagrange County researchers may discover reports about grandchildren of people in the first volume! Now those are steep prices--but the material is printed on archival paper which would last longer. If you have family in one of these books and can afford it, it's worth your while. (Higginson's can be reached by e-mail at higginson@cove.com; I believe they also have a website.) However, I suggest that you check your historical society if you wish to see pages in these books without paying the cost for purchasing the reprinted version. I know the Allen County Public Library in Fort Wayne has the second one on its shelves--and may have the first. I don't know whether these books have been microfilmed and found their way into the LDS FHC collections. Some of the Indiana biographies are also being transcribed online. I don't have the website address here, but I'm sure someone else on the list can supply the information. Be cautious with these. In addition to the typos which crept naturally into the printing of the original books, typos also exist in the transcripts. Nevertheless, good luck! I hope the above information will help.
