    1. WELCOME
    2. I would just like to take a minute to say thank you and good luck to the new list owner. Will be looking forward to those changes and some activity on this list. It really has been too quiet for too long. I appreciate the time and effort you are putting in. Next, is the families in which I am looking for. They are in both LaGrange Co and Elkhart County. I am looking for all ties and links to the FRAIN and SCHOEMANN families that settled iin those counties. I would also love to contact volunteers that can do some research for me. Would be more than willing to share all information that I have if we can find ties. Donna Bradley Anza, California

    1. Re: LaGrange County changes
    2. My ggtGrandfather, Solomon Puffer left Ontario Co., NY with his younger brother Charles in 1854 with their families. Solomon's wife was Clarissa Carolyn (Lown) Puffer. Solomon and Clarissa had 4 children. Ira bn. 1846, Mary bn. 1848, Solomon bn.1850 and Hiram bn. 1853. Somewhere between 1853 and 1860, Clarissa dies. 1860 census shows the family living in the home of the Hodder family who is no relation, with no Clarissa. This was in Johnson Twp. Living in the Erastus Nelson home in Clear Springs Twp. is his family and Hiram is counted amongst this family also. Arvilla, the woman of the home is the sister of Solomon. The Nelsons are buried in the Sloan Cemetery and I have that information on them. But where is Clarissa buried? It is only my assumption that Hiram being the baby needed mothering after the death of his mother and Solomon allowed him to live with his Aunt for a bit. Solomon and his family were living in Constantine, St. Joe Co. MI by 1863 where he married his 2nd wife before moving to Muskegon Twp, MI where he died in 1880 of Consumption. Here Hiram as a parent started the first school of the township in his living room. This was called "Hiram's School". When his home became too small to use as a school, a schoolhouse was built on his property and this became known as 'Puffer School". In 1934 Puffer School merged with Reeths School and became known as Reeths-Puffer School District. Today it is one of the biggest schools in the county. I am hoping that someone who has knowledge and/or can talk to the keeper of cemetery's can maybe find out if Clarissa is buried somewhere in that county. Any help, even death records of some kind would be of help. I even wonder if maybe some of her Lown family moved to IN with them. I would so very appreciate anything anyone can do. Warm Regards, June L. Beckwith

    1. LaGrange County changes
    2. Patti Norton
    3. Hi All! I would like to announce a couple of changes and introduce myself. Deb Murray has decided to give up the LaGrange mail list and LaGrange INGenWeb website to devote more time to the wonderful Biographies Project. She has graciously allowed all the work that she has done on the LaGrange website to stay with the site. She has passed the reins of these to me, Patti Norton. I don't live in LaGrange, or even the state, but have family roots in the area. Living in Central New York State, I don't have access to many LaGrange County resources, but I have enlisted the help of Bryan McCoy and Barbara Henderson to gather data to keep the website growing. I believe with their help, we will be able to keep adding new info to the website. Of course I will welcome anyone that would like to contribute information for the website. I have moved the LaGrange website to- http://www.rootsweb.com/~inlagran/ It has a new look to the front page and some new links to check out. I have added a What's New page to keep everyone informed of new additions, projects in the works, etc. So, now you can go there and see what has been added or changed since you last visit to the website. This mail list has been VERY quiet! Perhaps it is a good time to call for a Roll Call and have listers post their surname interests to get things started up again. I look forward to my new responsibilities as list owner and County Coordinator and to meeting more of you! Patti

It is told of her, as an instance of what pioneer girls had to endure, that at one time, when living at home, and her father dangerously ill and without any remedy or doctor near, she walked through the forests the whole distance to Lima, about fifteen miles to bring Dr. Jewett, the nearest physician. Most of the journey, an Indian trail was the only road, and at one point she had to cross Buck Creek, which was swollen with floods, and only partially bridged with logs. But she pulled off her shoes, and jumping from log to log, made the passage safely and brought the doctor to her father. [FN:Source:HISTORY OF LAGRANGE COUNTY, Page 212:FN] More About SABRINA C. 1. Amish Settlements & Addresses
    2. I don't know about specific Amish settlements or meetinghouses in LaGrange County, but they surely must be there. Several years ago, I had the opportunity to visit the city of LaGrange, where my gg grandparents had settled in the 1840s. The court house is a beautiful old building. At the rear are enormous parking spaces, roomy enough for a horse and buggy to park. I don't have the address of the court house, but it would be worthwhile writing them to pose your question. Building on that question, does anyone on this mailing list have the addresses of: The LaGrange County Courthouse? The LaGrange County Historical Society? any LaGrange County genelogical societies? Thank you. Coralie J. Allen Minneapolis, MN gg granddaughter of Robert McClaskey of LaGrange
