Thanks Jerry for the David French anniversary article. The Kosciusko GenWeb page has a biography posted for David's brother Ezekiel D. French. Ezekiel was married to my gr grandfather's sister. Like David, they had no children, but raised one of the wife's nieces. Ezekiel, like David, also spent a few years in CA; he was listed in the 1870 census in the mining town of Monitor in Alpine Co. in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. I haven't found when Ezekiel or his wife died (maybe they moved to CA, too), but the article confirms that he must have died before 1905.
