I don't expect any members of this group to be able to be there as most of you are located in other states. However, this hearing is REALLY importan= t and we need people to express their support this Bill. Otherwise, it can easily just DIE right there. HB 1522 has passed the House of Representatives and now must survive passa= ge by the Senate. The full text of the Bill and information on its status is available at: http://www.state.in.us/cgi-bin/legislative/bills/completeBillInfo.perl?bil= ln um=3D1522 This bill will add a new Section to the Indiana Code prohibiting a person from recklessly, knowingly, or intentionally damaging personal property contained in a structure or located at a cemetery or a facility used for memorializing the dead. It will add an entirely new section to the India= na Code requiring any person lawfully removing a grave marker of any description to file with the County Recorder a detailed written report and photographs of the stones and the site. It will make it illegal to buy or sell any cemetery art or artifact removed from a cemetery. It will requir= e that all grave memorials installed after 1/1/2000 must contain the name of the cemetery where the memorial is to be installed by the same process tha= t the individual's name is added. It will REMOVE the current exemption whic= h allows anyone involved in ANY "agricultural purpose" from being allowed to disturb a burial site. It will add new language making it illegal to disturb, deface or damage any cemetery monument. We all know that HB 1522 is not the "answer" to the whole crisis we are facing -- but it is an IMPORTANT first step. We will go back next year an= d try to make it even stronger. It is our hope that HB 1522 can bring about an END to the legal destruction of pioneer cemeteries in Indiana. Can any of you find time between now and Tuesday afternoon to e-mail membe= rs of this Senate Committee to tell them how you feel about this issue? Sen. Robert Meeks <[email protected]> Sen.
