    3. Gene, One thing we need to remember ... census takers did not know how to spell all of the names. Sometimes I wonder what it would have been like to be a census taker in the 1860's, going from home to home and trying to write down what each home owner was telling me. I am sure that I could not understand some of the people with their "different" language from different countries. And I doubt that some of the home owners could spell their names either. Now in the 1990's we are trying to read what the census taker has written ... the old hand writing, bad microfilm, etc. I have seen more changing of the letters than a prefix changing. It could be possible. It would be interesting to see how our ancestors really wrote their names back then!
