In the CENTENNIAL SCRAPBOOK, the article titled "Beighs Locate Claypool in 1873" gives the information like this: "The place derives its name from the postoffice, which was established in 1840 on the farm of Joshua Caldwell, who was, until discontinued in 1865, the postmaster. The office was again established with the same name in 1873, with Captain John Wells as postmaster. By virtue of the name given the postoffice the village was and has been since known." The village of CLAYPOOL was established as a station on the Cincinnati, Wabash and Michigan Railroad. The town was laid out May 10, 1873 by John M. and Nelson Beigh who were proprietors of the land upon which it was situated. (info found in the Claypool Centennial book - p12) Clay Township was one of the early townships. Marge Priser http://freepages.history.rootsweb.com/~kosco
