I do not know anymore about these families or these surnames. NOTE: I don’t know if there is any additional mention of this family in the book, it has no index. I do not want to sell this book. I am typing the biographies from it. Typed by Lora Radiches: Surnames in this biography are: TINDAL, Brock, Pierce, Saxton EDWARD F. TINDAL, M. D., of Muncie, is a specialist widely known over eastern Indiana, with a reputation for exceptional skill as a physician and surgeon of the eye, ear, nose and throat. Doctor Tindal has practiced at Muncie since 1901, and has been a resident of Indiana for over thirty-five years, but is a southerner by birth and represents a long line of worthy people of the Carolinas. The Tindal’s came from England, first settling in the original center of the colonists of the Carolinas, in what is now North Carolina, and later moving to Clarendon County, South Carolina. Here the ancestors of Doctor Tindal helped clear the forests and spread the area of planting and agricultural industry, and in nearly every generation since representatives of the family have been sturdy farmers and home builders, have been loyal to their church, most of them Baptists, and have done their part in establishing and maintaining schools and other social agencies. During the Revolutio! n they fought under Generals Sumter and Francis Marion, and took part in some of the famous battles, which drove the regular forces and the Tories out of the Carolinas. Doctor Tindal’s mother’s people were the Brocks, another prominent family of South Carolina. Doctor Tindal was born on a cotton plantation near Summerton, Clarendon County, May 27, 1869. His parents, Levy R. and Eliza M. (Brock) Tindal, were life long residents of Clarendon County. His father, Capt. Levy R. Tindal, at the age of seventeen enlisted in the Confederate army and served until the end of the war. On April 7, 1865, he was captured by Grant’s army near Petersburg, Virginia. He served in Gary’s Brigade of South Carolina cavalry, in Lee’s army. After the war he became captain of a local company of South Carolina state militia, from 1877 to about 1880. He was a farmer by occupation, and followed farming as a business from 1865 until 1921. He was for many years a d! eacon in the local Baptist Church and superintendent of the Sunday school. His wife was a daughter of Col. John Brock, who served as an officer in the Confederate army and later was a member of the South Carolina Legislature. Doctor Tindal during his boyhood experienced some of the poverty, which was the common lot of the South as a result of the war. He was educated in common schools and spent three years in the University of South Carolina, where he completed the work of the junior year and part of the senior year. Later he came north to Indiana and during 1894 and part of 1895 was a student at Valparaiso University, taking the degree Ph. G. in July, 1895. From there he entered the Medical College of Indiana and was given his M. D. degree in 1897. During the next five years he took special courses in eye, ear, nose and throat diseases and surgery at the Chicago Clinical School and the Chicago Polyclinic. In the meantime, in 1897, he located at Stone Bluff, Fountain County,! and practiced there until 1901, when he moved to Muncie, where from the first his services and skill have been largely limited to his work as a specialist of surgery of the eye, ear, nose and throat. Doctor Tindal has offices in the Wysor Building. He is a member of the Delaware-Blackford County Medical Society, the Muncie Academy of Medicine, the Indiana State and American Medical Associations. Doctor Tindal has enjoyed a success that has satisfied his ambition for doing the best within the limit of his powers and talents in his profession, and to his profession he has given his undivided time and attention without seeking any of the opportunities for broader participation in civic affairs and business. He owns Muncie real estate and personal property and has a well-located grain and stock farm of 170 acres in Delaware County, his farm being stocked with high grade Jersey cattle and Duroc hogs. He was never a candidate for public office, but has been keenly interested in a! ffairs of the Republican Party. Fraternally he is affiliated with Muncie Lodge No. 433, A. F. and A. M., Welcome Lodge No. 37, Knights of Pythias, Muncie Camp No. 4225, Modern Woodmen of America, and for twenty-seven years has been medical examiner for the camp. He has since 1901 been a member of the Muncie Chamber of Commerce, and since locating in that city has had membership in the High Street Methodist Episcopal Church and for several years served on its official board. Doctor Tindal married, July 19, 1895 at Milford, Indiana, Miss Hattie Malcolm, a daughter of Landon C. and Lucy (Pierce) Malcolm, of Kosciusko County Indiana. He was a boy when his parents came from West Virginia and settled in Elkhart County, and in his early manhood he acquired a farm n the northern part of Kosciusko County and devoted his attention to his land and his business affairs very successfully. His wife, Lucy Pierce, was born in Elkhart County, her people coming to Indiana from New Hampshire a! bout 1840. Landon and Lucy Malcolm reared a family of eight children, and they did their part in the work of their church, in the maintenance of the local schools and in the social advancement of their community. Mrs. Tindal graduated from the teachers’ department of Valparaiso University in 1893 and taught in graded schools in her home county until her marriage. Since coming to Muncie she has been an earnest member of the High Street Church, belongs to the Woman’s Club and other civic organizations. Doctor and Mrs. Tindal have one son, John Malcolm Tindal, now at the outset of his career as a physician. He was born October 8, 1896, graduated from the grade and high schools of Muncie, took several semesters in the Ball Teachers College, and then entered Indiana University. He took his Bachelor of Science degree there in 1928 and his M D degree from the Indiana University School of Medicine in June, 1929, and has since been serving his internship in the Indian! apolis Methodist Episcopal Hospital. John Malcolm Tindal married, in June, 1918, Miss Esther Saxton, of Indianapolis, a graduate of the city schools and the Manual Training School of Indianapolis. Dr. and Mrs. John Malcolm Tindal have one child, Virginia Louise, born in 1921, now attending the Indianapolis schools.
