His mother, Elizabeth had come from Pennsylvania. Arch's grandfather, Henry Kuykendall, Sr. was a Revolutionary War "Patriot" in Hampshire County, VA. (This county is now a part of West Virginia.) He did not serve as a soldier but is credited with being a Patriot since he furnished significant goods and services to help the war effort. His descendants are entitled to membership in the DAR and SAR. He died in Ohio in 1818. Henry Jr. came to Ross County, OH about 1798. He changed the spelling from the old Dutch Kuykendall to Kirkendall. In the 1850 census for Kosciusko county, Hamilton township, there was a family headed by Abraham, 43, farmer born in Pa, and included Louisa, 42, Ohio, - Adam, 18, farmer, Ohio, - Malissa A, 16, Ohio, - Amanda R, 13, Ohio, - Mary, 10, NC, - Thos B, 7, Ind, - Martha, 3, Ind, - and John, 2/12, Ind. No family relationships are shown. Living next door is what may be the family of another son of Abraham and is headed by William H Sarber, 20, farmer, Ohio, and included Mary A, 19, could not make out the birth state but appears to be NY, and Christen, 2/12, Ind.
