Either because they are an illegal immigrant, or they are trying to commit welfare or credit fraud. It happens all the time. If you have a birth certificate of someone living, you can get a replacement copy of their Social Security card... you can see where that one is going!! Think of what a dishonest person could do with a fake birth certificate and social security card. The next thing they would have is a replacement drivers license, credit cards and checking accounts... yuk!! My mom went to Michigan to get copies of birth records, the type that are hand written in the huge ledger books, all pre 1900. They wouldn't even let her look at the books!!!!! They hand wrote certificates and then certified them from the original ledger books. No photocopies, no camera photos, you can't even lay eyes on them! They stood between her and the books on the counter so she couldn't peek! For Pete's sake!!! Her GGGgrandfather died in an asylum in Kent County Michigan. That was around 1870. Many times they were used for the disabled and elderly, not just the mentally ill patients. We cannot get any information from the asylum at all. They say it is confidential information! From 1870.. geez!! Guess we have to be glad when we get any info at all from some of these places! Cheryl Cheryl

It is too bad that honest folks end up paying for other people's ignorance and dishonesty. Sure would be nice if that were to change, but ..... Cheryl

I see that on the state page...Indiana death records are now $6.00 compared to $4.00 last time I checked... I suppose that to some people getting a death record for $6.00 might seem cheap... it would depend on what you were comparing it to... but I wonder how far up the ladder "copy cost" is going to climb. Our tax money pays for the government offices and machines and salaries for people to run the offices and machines. WHY is there an additional charge... for copies... and where is it going to end... $20.00 each record?.... $20.00 each copy?? Is there anyone else out there who thinks this is getting out of hand? Is this a topic to be discussed, and if so, who do we need to contact to see how many we had better get at $6.00 each... before the price goes up to $10.00 each? Do we, as mere taxpayers have a any "say" in the matter. Question respectfully submitted, marge priser >> Marge, Birth and Death Certificates in Washington State are now $13 and there is talk of them going up to $15 shortly. Uncertified, cheaper copies are no longer available. One of the justifications for the state increasing the charges are that they are now making a service available so that you may go to any county office and receive a certified copy of birth or death certificates from any other county while you wait. This was only available in the city of Olympia for the state, and even then you usually had to pick it up the next day, not much while you wait service. Cheryl Hawley

    3. Marge, I understand your questions and concerns. However, costs keep rising and I feel that even though we pay taxes to support these gov't agencies, I also am in agreement with "user fees" to help keep the taxes down! And think about this - since I live out of state, I don't pay taxes to Indiana, therefore, if there were no fees for copies of certificates, then I'd be virtually getting them for free. How fair would that be to an Indiana taxpayer? I don't mind paying the fees. It's a lot cheaper to write for a certificate than to fly clear across the country to make my own copy! What I find interesting is the variation in costs - Ohio charges only $1 if you don't need a certified copy. There are several states that charge between $10-15. In Australia, if you don't have the registration number, it costs AUS $32, which is equivalent to US $19.72 at this writing (of course, if you have the number, it's only half that!) And then there are the states that won't even release copies for research unless a significent time frame has passed (NY for example - birth certificate 75 yrs after the registration and the person is known dead, and for death certificates - they have to be on file for 50 years!) 2. Marjorie Priser
    3. Was on the Kosciusko County web page last night and found two new additions -the coordinator has added a link to June Byrne's web page on the CLOVER families that features CLOVER entries from the 1790-1820 censuses. June will be adding more to the page on a regular basis, I'll bet. And a link has been added to a huge database of newspaper information. CompuGen Systems in Fort Wayne IN has compiled over 3.5 million entries of vital statistics (births, deaths, marriages, etc., etc.) from newspapers all over the state of Indiana. There is a fee for this service, however, to give you a clue as to the amount of entries for a particular surname, you can check on the web page to see a count of entries by surname. Entries for Kosciusko County are especially heavy, in that at least three people in this county have, over a period of time contributed to the database. The report is an index. You can e-mail CompuGen (Stuart Harter) with any further questions. marge priser

    1. [INKOSCIU-L] Pierceton Hotel-Early 1900s
    2. I'd like to find out more about a hotel in Pierceton that I believe was across from the railroad tracks near the station. It may have been in operation in the late 1800s to early 1900s, but that's just a guess. I have a pressed- back, oak chair with arms that came from the hotel. My great-grandfather, Joseph LEEDY MENZIE 1851-1933, brought it home & may have had an interest in the hotel. He was married to Elsie MAKEMSON. Joseph, & later my grandfather, Charles Joseph MENZIE 1896-1984, used the chair at the dining table, and I now have it. Both were known for cleaning their plate with a piece of bread until it looked clean--so I tell my guests who sit in it that they have to do the same! I'd love to know a bit more about the origin of this sentimental piece of furniture. Brenda Robison Indianapolis, IN

    3. Regarding my previous post about the soldier book from Fulton County. As I reread my post.. I noticed that I didn't specifically say that it was likely that most of the 1000+ soldiers would be from Fulton County. There MAY be a few from Kosciusko county... especially the bordering areas like Akron or Burket, but most would probably be Fulton county soldiers. Marjorie Priser

    2. Marjorie Priser
    3. Just read in our local weekly newspaper that FULTON COUNTY... the county to the south of Kosciusko County has a new book, published by the Fulton County Historical Society that is a listing of name, address, rank and regiment, enrollment and discharge dates and references on 1081 soldiers . The press release says that the book is 28 pages, 8 1/2 x 11 with soft cover. This is a "reprint" of the 1963 list, originally compiled by Waldo Adams (at one time, county historian for Kosciusko County)... but has been computerized, updated, proofread and corrected in its new edition. There is no price given. Perhaps the price could be obtained from the Fulton County GenWeb page. This book may be of interest to persons researching families with soldiers who might have gone to Rochester to enlist... rather than Warsaw. Marjorie Priser [email protected]

You expressed an interest in Bishop Otterbein - but I wasn't sure if you wanted copies of his biography. If so, it is 25 pages long ... plus the front page ... making 26 pages at 15¢ each ($3.90) plus postage. Do you indeed want a copy? If so, just let me know ... and include your mailing address. The book is quite yellowed but I am getting copies that are certainly readable - but still very dark.
