There were several mentions of Rhodes over the holiday break. Does anyone have information about the descendants of Lydia Rhodes (b. Jun 1863) who married 23 Aug 1884 in Kosciusko to David Ritter, son of John Ritter and Elizabeth Hamon/Hamman? I have children Bertha, Mary, Dora, John and Ruth as of the 1900 census, but little additional information, except that Dora married Melvin Messimore in 1909. Where did the family go after 1910? Thanks, Phil
Hard not to notice that name Coffinberry. There are Coffinberrys in Richland County, Ohio. So, I checked my notes and found the following: George Ludwig Coffinberry was born in Stugart, Wurtemburg, Germany, early in the eighteenth century. Katrina Kimmel was born in Hanover about the same time. They were married in Germany and moved to the colony of Virginia, where they made their home at martinsburg, Berkely County; where all of their children were born and married, and where George Ludwig died at the age of 108 and whre katrina died at the age of 116. Their children were: Jacob Lewis--George Lewis--Mary married to George Stippe--Frances married to Frederic Stippe--Elizabeth married to James Curtis--Sally married to William McCaslen--Nancy to John Sivert--Katherine to Henery Young. I have more information on George Lewis and his son Andrew and Sarah Coffinberry. All lived in Richland County, Ohio. The path from Berkely County, Virginia to Richland County, Ohio from the documents I have is Ross County, Fairfield, Coschcoton, Knox and then Richland County. This may help you track your Coffinberrys. I haven't been able to make a connection with these Coffinberrys. George Lewis Coffinberry married Mary McClure in Richland County, Ohio but I have not figured out who Mary McClure is yet. The reason I am subscribing to Kosciusko Co, IN list is that Thomas and James McCluer in my line bought land in that county and are from Richland County, Ohio. Later in the notes of my third great grandfather, there is a John McCluer living in Warsaw, Indiana who he visits in 1880. James W. Hello, all - Happy New Year. Continuing my practice of forwarding all Rhodes material which comes over my computer here in Ohio, I am sending this on for those interested in the Rhodes name. This one, however, is from Indiana with an Ohio connection. Sasha Stanley in Ohio Obituary - St. Joe News, DeKalb County, Indiana, Thursday, June 21, 1923. Civil War Vet Dead Charles Rhodes of Spencerville Died at Fort Wayne Charles A. Rhoades, 79 years of age died Sunday morning at a Fort Wayne hospital of complicated diseases. Mr. Rhoades had been failing in health for some time and about a week ago was taken to the hospital. Charles A. Rhodes the only child of Mathias and Clestia A. Rhodes was born in Akron, Ohio, October 30, 1843, and departed this life at the Methodist Hospital at Fort Wayne, June 17, 1923, aged 79 years 7 months and 17 days. When a young man he came to this country with his parents and located on a farm on the Allen and DeKalb County line southwest of Spencerville, where he spent most of his days in farming. The deceased was a pioneer setties, a worker in his community and an intensely patriotic American citizen and soldier, who loved his country and offered his life as a sacrifice on the alter of liberty when the nation was tottering. As a pioneer settler he was not the first but nevertheless at the time of his coming the country was one of vast forest, swamps, and ponds with few churches, schools and roads. He courageously did his part in helping to change it into the beautiful country we know today. As a soldier he served his country in freedom's cause as a volunteer in Co. G. of the 74th Ohio Regiment of Infantry from October 26, 1861 until October 3, 1862. Being wounded and disabled he was sent to the hospital at Columbus, Ohio, where he recieved an honorable discharge. His love for the old flag under which he faught never diminished and one of the pleasing sights to him was to see Old Glory floating in the free American air. Mr. Rhodes was also a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 556 of Spencerville, to which order he faithfully contended. His first marriage was to Katie Bowman. This marriage was blessed with three children, Frank Rhodes of Akron, Ohio, and Rufus and William who died in childhood. The death summons called his first companion to the Spirit world. In 1877 he again was united in marriage to Aroline Burley and to this union were born three children, Metta Furnish who resides on the old homestead, Burnette Rhodes of Concord, Indiana, and Lori Newman, deceased. The deceased leaves to morn their loss a wife, three children, nine grandchildren and a host of friends. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 2 o'clock P.M. from the home, Rev. F.E. Brewster officiating. Burial at White City Cemetery, E.R. Kinsey funeral director.

Two of the KIMES from Kosciusko Co married LEIGHTYs. Sarah Jane Kimes married a Samuel LEIGHTY on 14 March 1852 in Kosciusko Co, IN and Daniel Kimes, b: 1828 in PA, married a Mary LEIGHTY on 17 January 1851 in Kosciusko Co, IN. I don't know if Samuel and Mary LEIGHTY were brother and sister, but since both married after 1850, they were most likely living with their parents and the following family lists both a Samuel and Mary on the 1850 census record for Kosciusko Co, IN: LEIGHTY descendants 1 ? Well cheers to The Defiance Democrat for calling it like it was! ;) I wonder if anyone will want to claim him as theirs! Poor soul! I wouldn't have thought anyone would have come into Hicksville, Ohio, for that big of a party! The good old days!
Hello, all - here is another Rhodes link for those looking for Rhodes in Ohio. Just thought I'd pass it on since I know several are interested in the name in Ohio. Sasha Stanley Madison Rhodes of Mark Center, was killed by a train running over him on the B. & O. track, and tearing his body to pieces so that he could hardly be recognized, when found on Wednesday morning. He had been in Hicksville Tuesday afternoon, with other parties and became quite intoxicated. He was quite noisy in the evening, and was about to be arrested by S. M. Boon constable, when he left for home. He was killed about four miles from Hicksville. When he started from town there were several parties with him. D. G. Huffman agent at B. & O. depot, says Rhodes had a quarrel with one of the party, below the station toward Mark Center. It appears that he was lying on the track either too drunk to get out of the way of the train, or else he was waylaid by someone. The train hands report that they did not see him on the track. At this writing no inquest has been held. He was a man of a family and about thirty years of age. >From the Defiance Democrat, Defiance, Ohio, Thursday, July 5, 1877.

Sorry to tell you that the Death Records in Kosciusko Co, IN start about 1882. You will have to check for Estate Records (See Lookup available at Kosciusko Co, IN Website), Will records (Index is one of the databases on-line at Kosciusko Co, IN Website), cemetery records, and newspapers. Sure wish the death records did extend back that far. Sigh. [email protected]
I haven't been on this list long and don't know any of the people. My heart goes out to the Scheuer family. May God be with them in this time of sorrow and tragic event. I will pray for them in my daily prayers. As our ancestors would have said in times of need, "Call upon the Lord in the time of need. Call upon your neighbor to be your steadfast friend." Those who answer the call serve no higher purpose. Although my ancestors haven't been in Warsaw, Indiana since the late 19th century, feel free to call upon me to be a friend during this time. sincerely, Jim McCluer

I am writing to ask if anyone on this list has access to the Kosciusko County vital records for the period 1861 through 1880 that is willing to do a death record search for me? Eli CLARK, b. abt. 1813 in OH, married Elizabeth Curtis DUNLAP on 03-31-1835 in Coshocton Co., OH and possibly died in Kosciusko Co., IN between 1861 and 1880. His wife, Elizabeth, was listed as living with her son in Franklin Twp., Kosciusko Co., IN on the 1880 U.S. Census (without Eli). Elizabeth died in Kosciusko Co., IN on 04-17-1883 and was buried in unknown cemetery. I would, in return, look up any U.S. Census surname you might need information on.
