    1. [INKOSCIU-L] Re: WILKINSON surname, ca 1900

    3. Wow! Didn't know the mention of the WILKINSON surname would reap this many replies; no wonder the name is seen frequently in relation to the locality. Felicia wrote: > > My g grandfather was Charles (Charlie) Wilkinson. While the family > lived in Koscuisko Co early on, at about the turn of the century they > moved to Elkhart and remained there. My ggrandmother Frances Drake > Wilkinson Clark was though. > The Charles Wilkinson you mentioned seems a little old to be the right Charles, but it's possible Anna married someone 22 years older than she was! My Anna (Horein) Wilkinson was the youngest daughter born to Christian and Caroline Horein of Madison Twp; her birthdate - 10 October 1885. From family hearsay, she seems to have spent many of the latter years of her life alone; perhaps because her husband died much earlier or they were divorced. All that is known is what an elder relative remembers - visiting Anna in the 1940's; she remembers no man. Milt wrote: > > I find a fair number of Wilkinsons in the late 1800's in Elkhart Co., > but I don't find matches to your information. Family knowledge of the couple is limited to the fact they had a son and a daughter that were both still living when family history records were published in 1969. To date, I've not been able to find a marriage record, but "The Mishawaka Enterprise" ran an obit for Anna Wilkinson who died 29 October 1963 and the S.S. Death Index lists she died in Indiana. This matches the info our family has. Maybe with these details, someone will note a match! Thanks, Cindy Note: For those in St. Joseph and Kosciusko Co, we just started a discussion of the WILKINSON surname on the Elkhart Co email list; am sending a copy of this post to these lists since these folks also had connections to these counties. If anyone in any of these counties recognizes any of these folks, please contact Cindy Kimes at <[email protected]>

    3. In the new issue of Heritage Quest magazine (March/April 1999, page 50) another on-line resource of Kosciusko County is recognized. In Cyndi Howells'(Cyndislist) "Lineage Links" column, she recognizes the Kosciusko County Index to Early Wills 1844-1920 as amoung the best 9 links for this issue. Excerpting her comments: "This index, compiled by Larry & Cynthia Scheuer, is also available as a publication from the genealogy section of the Kosciusko County Historical Society. The site is arranged with an individual web page by surname for each letter of the alphabet. Each page lists the name of the person, the book number, page number and the original probate date for that person's will. There are also instructions and address information available for ordering copies of the wills from the historical society." You can visit the Will index from the Kosciusko Co USGenWeb page at: http://user.ctlnet.com/gan155/kosco.htm This is the second time that Cyndi has recognized our county's on-line resources. In the Nov/Dec 1998 issue, she recognized the entire Kosciusko Co USGenWeb site. Marge, could you pass this information on to Cynthia Scheuer? Thanks to all of the contributors that keep Kosciusko County amoung the tops in genealogical research resources! March 14, 1851 in Ohio Son of John D. Heighway, born in Ohio and Sarah AUSTIN *, born in Ohio. D. March 27, 1921, in Peru, Indiana, Miami Co., at age 70y 0m 4d. Funeral ordered by B. F. KRONER, March 29, 1921. Buried in South side of Lees Cemetery in Mentone, Ind. Funeral at Mentone Baptist Church. Lived in Peru, Ind. * I believe Sarah's maiden name was ANTRIM. This indicates there should be a death certificate available from the Miami County Health Dept, and it does confirm your (possible) death date of 1921. It is quite likely an obituary has been published locally for Benjamin F. Heighway . Hope this is helpful. Iva Nelson Silver Lake, Ind.

    1. [INKOSCIU-L] Update on Benjamin Franklin Heighway--Ring any bells?
    2. Howard T. (Tom) & Pam Green
    3. I posted recently asking for clues regarding the wife and children of my great-uncle Benjamin Franklin Heighway, son of John D. Heighway and Sarah W. Antrim. Since my posting I received some census information which furnished the names of the wife and children of Benjamin. I am wondering if this rings any bells with anyone. Benjamin Franklin Heighway (a.k.a. Franklin or Frank) b. Mar. 1851 m. ca. 1878 Minerva Children are Lester Heighway, born Feb. 1889 and Olena V. Heighway, b. May 1881, m. 1900 to Benjamin Korner b. Oct. 1874 (schoolteacher) The mystery remains --what happened to the descendants of Benjamin Franklin Heighway? Did he succeed in carrying on the family name? Pam Green [email protected]

    3. I am continuing to search for other living descendants of my great-great grandfather, John D. Heighway, who arrived in Kosciusko Co. in the mid 1840s, living there until his death in 1889. Descendants include BAKERS (my line) , LEININGERS, and perhaps JOHNSONS (through marriage of Mary Jane Heighway born ca. 1836 to John F. Johnson in 1856--no info. on children). There is one slim possibility that the Heighway name was carried on in Kosciusko Co. or its environs by John D. Heighway's son Benjamin Franklin Heighway, b. 1849-1851, d. 1921 (?). Benjamin had one daughter and one son, names unknown. In 1939 his nephew Colfax Heighway wrote "So you can see that it depends on him to perpetuate the name in our family." I have been unable to locate marriage information on Benjamin. It is possible that he is the Benjamin buried in Mentone cemetery, but there are several other men with the same name in the family, and this grave has also been attributed to others. I would love to hear from someone who has knowledge of any of the descendant families mentioned above! I would be ecstatic to discover information on descendants of Benjamin Franklin Heighway! Thanks for any insights, and have a wonderful Easter! Pam Green Falls Church, VA [email protected]

    2. Don't know if this will help or not. I recall my grandfather being a friend of Colfax HEIGHWAY. In going over my notes on Baptist churches in Fulton Co. (IN), I came across the following. From records of the annual meetings of the Weasaw Creek Regular Baptist Association (later the Logansport Baptist Association) found in the library of Franklin Collelge, Franklin, IN, Marion HEIGHWAY was clerk of the First Baptist Church of Mentone (Kosciusko Co., IN) from 1894 through 1899. In 1986, Iva Nelson sent me transcribed notes from the "Mentone Gazette - Tri-County Gazette", Mentone, IN - Issue date: 03 October 1891. Microfilm by Indiana Historical Society on file in Bell Memorial Library, Mentone, IN. "On page 1 is found a picture and biography of John D. Heighway, an early member and a man who did much financially for the Church and association work ..." The Tri-County Gazette might be a good source for you if you can get hold of it.
