    1. [INKOSCIU] City Directories & Newspaper Search services
    2. Marjorie Priser
    3. Resources online for our county continue to grow. As many of you know, Stuart Harter of CompuGen Systems in Fort Wayne offers a search service of newspapers for the state of Indiana. His massive database (4.5 million records) continues to grow and provides a valuable service for finding information often-times hidden in the newspapers of days gone by. There is a link to this service on the Kosciusko GenWeb Page. NOW Stuart has opened up another service - a search of over 500 Indiana City Directories and area Phone Directories. You can read about this service on Stuart's web page http://members.aol.com/CGSystems/DXSSearch.htm At the top of the page, be sure to click on LIST OF INDIANA DIRECTORIES. The list is compiled alphabetically by county and you will see that Kosciusko County is well represented in the list. There is a small fee associated with both the newspaper and directory search services. Be sure to check them out. If you have any questions, feel free to e-mail Stuart and ask. [email protected]

    1. Re: [INKOSCIU] Re: "W" Counties not in Census Indexes
    2. That would be a logical reason. However, I would be surprised if it was true. The census indexes were originally published by in book form by AIS, then on CD by GRS and then by Family Tree Maker on CD # 318. The indexes are all based upon the same databases. They have the same errors. Until the recent everyname index of Indiana, these were the only 1860 indexes of IN available. The copyright was originally owned by AIS and was sold to GRS. If WPA had indexed Indiana, AIS and GRS would not have owned the copyright. The librarian may have been thinking of Wisconsin. WPA money in Wisconsin was used to index Wisconsin Censuses for 1850, 1860 and 1870, I think. I could be wrong on which years were indexed. Anyway, the copies of the census owned by the Wisconsin Historical Society were used which has caused problems because the page numbers are different from the page numbers on the film you would get from NARA or LDS or AGLL. All of these are the same. FYI, the early 1860 AIS indexes of Indiana were missing Fulton, Warrick, White and Whitley co. Illinois was missing White and Williamson. I know that there are many problems with published indexes, but I don't know about other states. I have heard mutterings from time to time but not specifics. [email protected]

    1. Re: [INKOSCIU] Re: "W" Counties not in Census Indexes
    2. I was told by a Indiana State librarian that the WPA indexed the counties alphabetically and they ran out of money near the end of the alphabet, thus no print index for Whitley Co, IN census. Made sense to me but I've never verified. Brenda Robison Indianapolis, IN

    1. [INKOSCIU] Re: Unidentified subject!
    2. I love that census. One of the best censuses to read is the Whitley Co, IN one for 1860 or 1870. I can't remember which one it is, but it has comments on the people written in the margin by the census taker. It says things like " Sharp as a tack" or "Never shuts up" or "pinches a penny" If you have anyone in that county, you MUST look at this census. Unfortunately my people had no comments. I was looking through Whitley Co because it is not indexed in the older 1860 IN indexes. The new everyname index includes Whitley Co but not the older indexes. I would remind anyone using the older indexes that most states have several counties left out. Most of the omitted counties started with the letter W. It is probable that the original databases on CD ommitted some counties because they didn't have room for all of them on a CD. Later CD's simply continued the error. June

    3. We have all seen some strange entries on census. Ran across one today that I just had to share with all of you. Don had a g. grandfather on his mother's side who was named Robert and was a twin, the other boy named John. The boys were born in 1867. I have had the 1870 census ordered in for many months, finally got it in. Primarily got it to just have a xerox copy for our records. Found the family -- father, mother and three children older than the boys. Where the boys should have been listed, it was "JTR" age 2 M W born AL. Had to wait until we got the entry under the magnifying glass. It says, and I quote -- "J + R". The census taker in this census was great for writing initials down about half the time. In this case of twins, he put them both on the same line!! Had we not known that there were twin boys, and had the proof, we would be forever looking for a male JTR. Have seen some good ones, but this one so far takes first prize. Don and Mary in Wyoming

    3. EXTRACTED FROM "BIOGRAPHICAL AND HISTORICAL RECORD OF KOSCIOSKO COUNTY, INDIANA" LEWIS 1887, CHICAGO: SULLIVAN ECKERT, farmer and stockraiser, Harrison Township, is a native of Fairfield County, Ohio, born July 8, 1821, a son of John H. and Sarah Eckert, his father a native of Pennsylvania and his mother of Virginia. When he was eighteen years old his parents moved to Hancock County, Ohio, where they spent the remainder of their lives. He was reared in his native State, and was married in Hancock County, September 26, 1844, to Rachel McFall, a native of Ohio, and a daughter of William and Rachel McFall. To them were born ten children - Sarah is the wife of John T. Gates; Maria is the wife of Christian Stough; Catherine is the wife of Joseph Goodman; Lutitia is the wife of Albert E. Stone; Adaline is the wife of Joshua Wilson; Rachel E. is the wife of Milton Dorsey; Eliza is the wife of David Creighton; (added for clarity - two sons, John Henry and Lorenzo). Maria, Catherine and Eliza live in Hancock County, Ohio; Lutitia, Adaline and John live in Pottawatomie County, Iowa; and Sarah, Rachel, Emma and Lorenzo live in Kosciusko County, Indiana. Mrs. Eckert died April 11, 1886. In 1882 Mr. Eckert came to Indiana, and settled on the farm where he now lives in Harrison Township. He owns 320 acres of choice land, and his building improvements are among the best in the township. In politics he is a Republican. __________________________________________________________________ Notes from me: Sullivan Eckert died 21 August 1888. He and his wife are buried in Wooden Cemetery, near Mentone, Kosciusko County, Indiana. I have a list of the Eckert descendants who are buried at Wooden Cemetery. Also have pictures of the Eckert memorial stone at Wooden - Sullivan and Rachel's monument stone. __________________________________________________________________ My only request is that my name and e-mail address be posted with the bios. I am a g. g. granddaughter of Sullivan and Rachel Eckert. Thanks. Mary Thompson Saban [email protected]

When ever I see one of your messages, I wonder if you're related. Are You? I don't have any contact with this family since my mother died. This probably isn't useful information for you. Gail
