    3. Dear June, If you have a chance could you do a lookup for me? I saw that you could do the 1866 Kosciucko County census 6104706. I am interested in the Riggens/Riggins family of Etna Green Twp., Kosciusko County, specifically, Samuel and Lawson with their children. Thanks! A little note to your posting. People that react that way to a free service are usually unhappy with their own life and choose to make other people unhappy. It is people like you who I greatly appreciate. I live in a rural area and do most of my research through the internet and letters. Just in yesterday's paper they announced a new family history center opening in my area and you can bet if someone needs a lookup in my area I would certainly do it for free (minus postage and copy fees) but when it was convenient for me. I have gotten several of my relatives and friends hooked and I stress how nice and willing genealogists are to help new researchers. I hope I am not wrong. Kim

    3. I am new to this list but I think your idea is also great. Whenever I correspond with my "cousins" I also ask for a picture to include with their bio info. That is their "payment" for my material. By the way I am researching the following names: HEETER/HIBSCHMAN/RILEY/ELKINS/LAWRENCE/COLE/SANDERS Daniel J. A variety of opinion, most on the side of free volunteer lookups. This is what I think now - I would be almost nowhere on my genealogy if it were not for others who looked things up for me for free. I don't think I could have afforded to pay money to all those people. Once one gets a few generations down, the quantity of surnames and possibilities are numerous. I have over three dozen surnames already in just a short time researching. I could not afford to pay for everyone helping along all those lines. I probably have accumulated over three or four hundred email REPLIES to my queries. If those were a dollar a pop - whoa. Having said that, let me say this: The time I spend looking up for other people is not trivial - it added up to, this time, 4 or so hours last month of my annual leave. However, I consider that time as a gift to genealogists everywhere in return for their gift of their time and trouble looking up stuff for me. It is exciting to find someone for other people - I share in the "coolness" of the find. My time is free. As for the cost of film rental fees - I have no moral heartburn over asking people to share the cost of them if I am looking up lots of unrelated names. However I do not want to handle cash at all - not ask for it, not accept it. So ..... here's my decision: I will now ask for a donation - in fact an equivalent $1 donation - asking people who request a lookup to send me a postcard of their home town, or perhaps of the region of the person they are looking up. The postcard and stamp will cost THEM money, but I don't want the cash - all I want is a thank you and a collection of greetings from lots of people from around the world. How does that sound? 3. Kerry, Your idea of requesting a postal memory in exchange for census look-ups is a great one. Very ingenious. Good luck on those look-ups. Genealogy is exciting. And finding something - even if it isn't your own line - adds to the excitement. Best wishes in your work. Shirley Webb [email protected]

    1. [INKOSCIU] Sharing
    2. The quantity of sharing that occurs in genealogy is one of the most wonderful things about the hobby. There is a whole long list of people out there who have done marvelous things for me. I am kept busy just trying to give back to the community of genealogists. Usually I can't give back to the person who helps me but if I can pass it on, I feel like that works. I am sometimes concerned by the people who are asking for assistance. It seems to me that often they are relatively new to the subject and don't have the proper "manners". I can't think of a better word. So I would like to make these suggestions. The one thing that is probably the most important is politeness. Say thank you and please and be very gracious. Remember you asking a favor. And it takes so little time to reply and say Thanks. But it makes a lot of difference to the volunteer. When you are asking for assistance, be sure to offer to pay for copies and postage. I am willing to give my time, but I shouldn't have to pay money out of my pocket and truthfully, many genealogists can't afford to do so. I think it is really important to stress this. When people ask for things, they need to be realistic. I am on an Obituary Lookup list for the county where I live. Recently I received a request for an obit with just a month and year which they had gotten from the SSDI. Now, I pointed out that we don't have an index and I need a full death date. Otherwise I have to spend 2 or 3 hours pawing through several microfilms. I did however, say that I occasionally go to Orlando where there is a FL death Index and if the person could wait, I would eventually get the full date and be able to get the obit. Now, I think this last offer is above and beyond the call of duty. I thought I was being kind of nice about the whole thing. Lo and behold, I got back a really nasty letter saying if I wasn't going to do lookups, I shouldn't have put my name on the page. I was pretty shocked and insulted. I personally have had a lot more success getting help with honey than with vinegar. Fat chance she will ever get her death date or obit from me. Speaking of honey, I also suggest that you offer to do what you can in return. I maintain a lookup page of my very own which lists some of the materials I own. I also maintain a web site for my local FHC. On this website, there is a list of the permanant material at this FHC. I have had good luck with suggesting to people that I will be happy to do a lookup in any of the above in exchange for what I am asking. I very seldom actually have to do this, but the offer seems to help a lot. So you might list the catalog of a library or gen soc which is within your reach and offer to exchange lookups. Right-- now that I brought it up, the website of my local FHC is http://members.aol.com/junebyr/ch.html If you need something, let me know. I volunteer there every Saturday and will try to get your information. The following items are listed for Indiana which I could do lookups in. 3. Kerry, There are a lot of fellow genealogists doing free lookups for others - most of the genweb sites have a page with lookup offers. I have several books I do lookups in for free. You're not stepping into anyone's territory if you want to do lookups for free. That's a big difference between a lookup and doing someone's genealogy for them. I'm always careful to cite the source and page and use quotes when I share something out of one of my books. There aren't any copyright infringements (I don't think) for sharing little snippets. I have, however, told people that a particular book has a lot of info they might be interested in and tell them how to get a copy of it for their own library. Genealogists are the most sharing bunch I've ever seen! 3. I don't know what others do but I only charge if it costs me. Photocopies etc. I am like you....how do you charge that many people? I host two counties in Nebraska. Hayes and Hitchcock Counties and I have found a lot of surnames that duplicate from Kosc. County to Nebraska. Would love to have lookups done for my Daniel family and related in the 1870 census. Would help me a lot on childrens names that I haven't gotten to as of yet. Would be glad to help anyone needing lookups in southwest Nebraska where I live. 1. [INKOSCIU] 1870 Census Films Review Coming Up + Question to the List
    2. Kerry Butler
    3. Hello- I now have the two 1870 Kosciusko Cnty Census films on order. They will arrive in about three weeks. With the 1880 Wabash, Noble and Steuben county census last month, I performed free look ups for people who emailed me. So far this has amounted to around fifty heads of households plus the members within the house. I used a day of annual leave, over a few weeks, plus paid the loaner fees of $3.50 each film (around $20 so far), to do this. I have a question for the discussion lists - Am I suppose to charge (nominally) for this, or is it acceptable to offer these things for free? I have no problem doing free lookups generally. If it becomes too much, I don't do them. I look up my stuff first, then others'. As for the rental fees, I don't know of any way to ask for people who want lookups for a share of the cost - it is too small an amount of money for each person. A stamp would exceed their share! Besides, I wanted to rent the film for my own purposes anyway, not because anyone requested it of me. I would not of spent less money, and only perhaps four hours of time less, if no one at all had requested anything of me. However - am I undermining other people who do lookups for a fee as their "side" or primary business? Should I ask for a share cost of the rental fee for the films if I do other lookups in them? My inclination is to charge nothing, do whatever I have time for, and keep an "account" of names to email in case I have a lookup favor they can do for me in return some day in the future. I have no desire to bring money issues into this hobby of mine. Please chime in with an opinion - I suppose to my private email address below unless anyone thinks this is a wider discussion list topic - in which case post to the list. Thanks. Kerry Butler.
