    3. Buried in Oakwood Cemetery - Lot 33, Block 17 are 9 persons and ashes of 2. Among those are: Sara MEINARDI (died Jan. 5 1934 in Port Chester, NY) Rev. Garrett MEINARDI (died Columbus Ohio May 17, 1927) ashes of Ruth MASON (according to cem. records was 56 yrs. old died 1967.) Obit for Mrs. Sarah Meinardi of N.Y.C. formerly of Warsaw.reads in part.."The descedent is survived by 2 daughters Helen & Ruth." Excerpt from "REMEMBER WHEN" 6-13-95 in Warsaw Times Union: "Hoagy CARMICHAEL, 46, Hoosier composer of "Stardust" and numerous other popular song hits, who married a Winona Lake girl, Ruth Menardi, is acclaimed as a big-time coming movie star..." I would like to know if RUTH MASON and RUTH MENARDI CARMICHAEL are the same person, and if so, where and when did she die. (No record of obit in Warsaw Times Union in Doug Mayer's index for 1965-1969.) Is anyone researching this family? Would like to know the answers. THANKS in advance. marge P.S. In Indiana Historical Society album booklet on H.C., have found a small photo of Hoagy and LIDA with sons, Randy Bob 5 and Hoagy Bix, 7 in 1946. Are Ruth and Lida the same person? 3. A local resident is doing some house research and would like to know more about a family of broom makers. A Homer Nelson (wife, Maude) is listed as a "broom-maker" in a 1903 city directory. Jonathan Nelson (Miranda, wife) is listed in the 1910-11 city directory as having a broom factory. Is there anyone monitoring this list who knows more about this family? Thanks in advance... marge Marge Priser http://freepages.history.rootsweb.com/~kosco

    3. Gene, One thing we need to remember ... census takers did not know how to spell all of the names. Sometimes I wonder what it would have been like to be a census taker in the 1860's, going from home to home and trying to write down what each home owner was telling me. I am sure that I could not understand some of the people with their "different" language from different countries. And I doubt that some of the home owners could spell their names either. Now in the 1990's we are trying to read what the census taker has written ... the old hand writing, bad microfilm, etc. I have seen more changing of the letters than a prefix changing. It could be possible. It would be interesting to see how our ancestors really wrote their names back then! 2. Descendants of Thomas Tague bn NY m. Phoebe. It is not clear if this is his first or second wife. I am desc from his dau Elsie Elizabeth Tague m. Edward Sutton 1841 WI. Both bn ca 1825 NY moved to Mc Henry Co, IL, Buchanan, IA, and Marshall Co and Cowley Co, KS. Died Cowley Co, KS. Thomas Tague spent a lot of time out in the woods living with Indians. I haven't looked at this in a couple of years but if you have a connection I will dig it out. I believe it was her brother moved to NE and the desc swore the name was Montague. I think it was Horace Tague. As nearly as I can tell, there is no connection to the Tagues from the South. June Byrne [email protected]

    2. Interesting. I have a family which uses the name Tague for most of a century. Before 1830 I don't know. One branch moved to NE ca 1890 and promptly insisted that the name was Montague. I think Montague sounded snottier. June Byrne

    2. Gene Andert
    3. I have a question for all of you seasoned Kosciusko County genealogy researchers. Have any of you run across instances where a particular surname evolves over time from including a prefix to not including one, or shifting from one prefix to another? Let me give you an example of what I'm talking about. My 3ggrandmother was a "Vanferson/Vanpherson". Its spelled one of these two ways in various records. Rachel Vanferson died at the young age of 27 in 1878 leaving behind 4 young children. I find a family in the 1870 census, named VANPHERSON, that I believe to be the parents and siblings of Rachel. And the mother in this family is buried next to Rachel in the Union Cemetery in Washington Twp. But before 1870 and after 1878, there is no trace of this family in the Kosciusko County records. But in my exposure to many of the records of Kosciusko County, particularly the marriage records, I will run across a McPHERSON. This is where my question comes from. Are any of you aware of a name possibly evolving from VANPHERSON to McPHERSON? Am I grasping at straws here, or is this a possibility? I've also seen occurrences of names like LAUGHLIN and McLAUGHLIN. Was it possible that families would add or drop a prefix Surname? I'd be curious if any of you had run across something similar to this in our research. 1. [INKOSCIU] 1910 Noble Cnty Census - 1910 Kosciusko Cnty Census
    2. Kerry Butler
    3. Everyone - I have received the 1910 Noble County census films. I also have the 1910 Kosciusko County census film. I have a list of surnames I've been asked to lookup before in other census films (I think I've memorized it by now), and a few new ones, so I'll keep an eye out for those names - no need to re-request them at this time. I'll accept a few additional lookup requests if anyone wants one. Remember - one surname is best, two or three at most (put in order of importance). The township where the households are expected to be is helpful but not required - I can better concentrate on certain names that way. Since I have several years and counties of census films rented, please specify exactly which ones you're interested in. As always, my price for a successful lookup is a picture postcard of landscape or historical nature from the region you are researching, or your hometown. I've received several of these from people so far and they are appreciated - thanks! Please send requests via my private email - not this list. Thank you. Kerry Butler [email protected]

    1. [INKOSCIU] Beigh
    2. Thanks for the article, Marge. I'm just wondering if anyone out there has BEIGH in their family line. I do, but I haven't been successful at finding anyone who knows much about them. My Rhodes line, Enoch Rhodes (the second one, born in 1838, a year later than the first one) married a Beigh. Does this sound familiar to anyone? Please contact me. Jaira Scoles Hill Silverton, OR

    3. I have added 4 new articles to the YesterYear in Print page. 1) General Reub William's death announcement nearly covered the front page of the Northern Indianian in January 1915. 2) An article by Toby Aborn about the early Kosciusko County Fairs 3) An article by George Nye about the county in 1850. A lot of information about the earliest county poor homes. 4) and an article about how Warsaw Streets were named. Happy New Year to everyone! marge http://freepages.history.rootsweb.com/~kosco

    1. [INKOSCIU] Claypool
    2. Marjorie Priser
    3. In the CENTENNIAL SCRAPBOOK, the article titled "Beighs Locate Claypool in 1873" gives the information like this: "The place derives its name from the postoffice, which was established in 1840 on the farm of Joshua Caldwell, who was, until discontinued in 1865, the postmaster. The office was again established with the same name in 1873, with Captain John Wells as postmaster. By virtue of the name given the postoffice the village was and has been since known." The village of CLAYPOOL was established as a station on the Cincinnati, Wabash and Michigan Railroad. The town was laid out May 10, 1873 by John M. and Nelson Beigh who were proprietors of the land upon which it was situated. (info found in the Claypool Centennial book - p12) Clay Township was one of the early townships. Marge Priser http://freepages.history.rootsweb.com/~kosco
