Sticks, tinpans, bells, etc. joined in the chorus to complete the grand medley. May 6th, 1878 FROM QUEENSVILLE Dr. W. W. Morton has trials and tribulations manifold in his buesiness relations, and had the sympathy of his many friends. If flesh is grass Then Parley DAY is not a fish But a bale of Hay. May 5, 1879 FROM SCIPIO Last Saturday George DAY caught four bass which he sold to some Vernone fishers for one dollar. There are some nice fish being taken from our glassy stream by our fishermen, weighing from one pound to five pounds. April 19, 1883 QUEENSVILLE P. H. DAY has torn away his old cooper shop which adds much to our town. DIARY OF GEORGE W. B. McCONNELL Scipio, Indiana 1887 Saturday, 27 August. A clear day. I went to Seymour with Joe Ryan and came back to Reddington with Clint DAY and went to the picnic in (Diggs (?) Grove, 4 miles west of Reddington and came home that night about 12 o'clock. I rode most of the way with Sherman Davis and Isac Davis. EXCERPTS FROM PLAIN DEALER - 1889-1890 Arranged by topic. BUSINESS: 4/14/1889. Fields and Green will be the new firm name. N. B. Fields and Medad Green having formed a partnership, and will enter the mercantile world. They have bought 60 feet front of Mrs. Mary DAY and will build immediately. DRINK: 2/5/90 There was very near a serious accident at our grog shop last Saturday. A man who was "full" was fooling with a gun that was also loaded, when the gun was discharged the shot tearing into the floor, narrowly missing George DAY. ORGANIZATIONS: 8/30/90. T. L. Green and Mich DAY with their wives went to Rushville last Thursday to attend the reunion of their old regiment, the 37th. EXCERPTS FROM THE REPUBLICAN, North Vernon, Indiana 5/21/97, P. H. DAY won the fancy set of dishes of over 100 pieces at Amick and Green's store. SCIPIO ANECDOTES Scipio Around 1900 -- The Pennsylvania Railroad operated passenger trains, two north and two south every day from Madison to Indianapolis. There were Sunday train excursions to both points, also freight trains. Charles Butler was in charge of the depot and ticket office. Bill DAY, Oliver Poore and Kale Hoppus carried the mail by wheelbarrow to the post office. Bread for the stores was shipped by train from North Vernon, not wrapped, and sold for five cents a loaf or six for a quarter. 1906-1910 In 1906 the Scipio correspondent to the North Vernon Sun showed a sense of humor and a fondness for "quoting" Scipio scions which gives us a lively picture of village life in those days. 2/23/06. John Andy Day, the witty Irishman of this place, is generaly seen in some of our stores on the loafer's bench, talking about and disucssing base ball or prizefighting. 3/2/06. John Andy says "he believes that he will get married." 3/16/06. John Andy says, "Begorry and I couldn't get married if I wanted to for those I want I can't get, and those I can get the devil won't have." Say John, have you tried Sears Roebuck . . . 4/13/06. John Andy was busy making garden the last week. He expects to be married in a few days. 4/20/06. John Andy got dog bit and is as mad as can be. The 1907 and 1908 "Honest Jim" sent in "Scipio Items" column to the North Vernon Plain Dealer. He lived on a farm down on Wyloosing and fussed a lot about his son "Abe" and wife "Hepsibah." Occasional the item was written by "Mrs. Honest Jim." Here are some sampes from Honest Jim's column. 2/7/07 EVERYBODY'S POEM. Bennett, Waltermire, McNulty and Dean, Emily, Helmich, Clark and Greens, Webb, Ashby, Cain and Wilkerson, Coverts, Wilsons, Brown and Richardson. Neal, Schmore, Lewis and Poor, Adams, Hulse, Welch and Moor, McNichlae, Waddel, Foley and Braddock, Banks, Foist, Butlers and Pollock. Waughtel, Spauling, Herring and Koker, Lafety, Watson, Dick Connell, the joker, Littles, Tuttles, Martin and Roscoe, Sutton and Hoppus is all I know. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 5/29/18.
