THE 1850 INDIANA CENSUS WILL TELL WHAT STATE THE HUBERS CAME FROM. CHANCES ARE SHE WAS BORN IN AN EASTERN STATE. MY ANCESTORS CAME FROM NEW YORK.
Terry, Thanks so much for your quick response. I really do appreciate. I will be glad to wait until you check the newspapers. That seems to be my best bet at the moment. The baptismal records were checked. George Huber married Mary Schrenk in Jennings County and their first two children were born and baptized at St Joseph. Their last four children were born in Seymour; the first was in 1884. So George and Mary must have moved there before by that time. I have been unable to find George in any Jennings Co census in 1880 or 1870. He supposedly came to the US thru New Orleans in 1861 - that is according to his papers. But I understand sometimes the date is wrong. I have no way of knowing whether George came directly to IN or whether he worked his way up. He certainly is being a "difficult ancestor". Thanks again, Terry. Carlene
I am trying to locate additional information on an Elizabeth Huber who is buried in St James Cemetery, across the street from St Joseph. Fr. Brown at St Joseph has been extremely helpful to me hunting information on a George Huber family who lived in the area. This Elizabeth Huber died Nov 23, 1883 at the age of about 85 years. Fr. Brown searched, but the church had no additional information. Is there anyone who might give me some ideas about where to go from here to see where she was born, any children, or any other info about her. My reason is that George came from Germany; his mother's name was Elizabeth. I would like to know if this might be her or not. Was there a newspaper at the time that might have an obit? Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks. Carlene
Hi Carlene, I checked the book 1 of the death records, which I have a copy of here at home and Elizabeth Huber is not listed. That is not surprising since many of the early deaths were not recorded (book 1 covers 1882-1890). There are newspapers at the library and I will take a look when I am there next and see what is there. Please be patient--since my husband took a job almost 2 hours away each way and having the little ones at home (5 ages 5 and under), my library time is VERY limited. But I will let you know what I find. Did Father Brown check baptismal records for you? What do you know about George? Do you know when he died? Oh, I just thought of one more thing. I do have a few townships of the 1870 census here at home. I'll see if Spencer is one of them and let you know if I find any Hubers. Terry
I've been slacking about sending reminders lately, but we have some new members and I wanted to make sure everyone knew how to check the 100 Years Ago today column. Go to http://www.northvernon.com/. Click on Local News on the side menu. Then scroll down to the 100 Years Ago today column. Happy Hunting! Terry

Through a process of elimination, I believe that his father was David Clarkson. David married Elizabeth "Patty" Redmon in Goochland Co in 1751. According to the Douglas Register a son, William, was born to this union on Sep 25, 1774 and was Baptized Jan 3, 1775. Between 1800 and 1810 the family moved to Kentucky. By 19 May 1812 he bought 120 acres on Long Run, Shelby Co., from Caleb and Larkin Martin of Jessamine Co. for $600. Then on 10 Oct 1831 he bought another 44 acres from William Taylor of Oldham Co. for $110. He moved his family to Jennings Co., IN and sold both tracts of land to Hugh Galey in 1834 for $1124. Barbary signed this deed and her attorney, James Whitaker, "talked to her privately and apart from her husband" to make sure she was not being pressured into selling - a beginning for women's rights. On 9 Feb 1837, he was an original land purchaser in Jennings Co. where they settled on Graham Creek. When he died, his inventory consisted of a clock, a little spinning wheel, 18 yards of carpet and the usual household and farm items. Barbara received 4 acres and the brick dwelling house. However, she died between 10 Aug 1841 and 4 Oct 1841. Her son Henry was appointed administer and he gave her inventory as a horse, colt and household goods. My gr gr grandfather Thomas Fall came from Scotland to Jennings County, Indiana in the mid 1800's with a wife, Jane or Jean and two son's Henry and William. They had a son Alexander and a daughter Ruth born in North Vernon. The census records show several other Falls there at that time. S ince many of the emmigrants who came over did so with the help or at least encouragement of friends and family already here, I am wondering what connection they might have had to the Fall's already there. Hello. Does anyone have access the 1860 (or 1870, for that matter) census to find the household of Whitfield LETT (the name Whitfield gets spelled everywhich way, naturally). I have Whitfield in every other census he was alive for except these two. I would really like to know exactly what is on the 1860 one. Whitifield Lett lived in Marion & Montgomery townships in Jennings county. He was a carpenter, who lived near Paris, IN. Wife on the 1860 census should be Sarah J (Hunt)--They married 1856.
