Carlene, You are right, the health dept. would not have death records for those dates. They might have some, but VERY few. Your best bet would be to check the Jennings Co. cemetery records, I think the library in North Vernon has cemetery records. Or, if if they were affilliated with a church, and it had a cemetery, they might be buried in that cemetery. Also, if they lived near another county, you might check the cemetery records for that county. Good Luck! -Cindy ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! Juno offers FREE or PREMIUM Internet access for less! Join Juno today! Can anyone tell me where to find 1861 through 1880 death records for Jennings Co? I am hunting any Hubers (Hoovers) who died during that time. I am sure that these dates are too early for the Health Dept to have records, isn't that right? Thanks to anyone who can help me. Carlene

I am not researching this family, just thought I would share. I do not know anymore about these families or these surnames. Typed by Lora Radiches: Surnames in this biography are: Matthews, Steele, Stearns, WILLIAM S. MATTHEWS An old and honorably conspicuous family long known in the United States bears the name of Matthews, a nomenclature held in high esteem in Jennings County, Indiana, where it is borne by William Matthews, educator, lawyer and postmaster of North Vernon. The founders of his family in America were early Colonial settlers In Virginia, where they became extensive planters, men of affairs and of social importance. In the early struggles with the Indians and later, in the Revolutionary war, the name of Matthews became prominent in national history, and since then, not only in public life, but in the professions and in business also, each community in which they have settled has been benefited through their loyal public spirit and enterprising activities. During his seven years as postmaster of North Vernon Mr. Matthews has greatly improved the service and has set an example of upright faithful attention to public duty. William S. Matthews, sometimes affectionately tailed “H! ill” by his hosts of friend, was born on a farm in Jennings County, Indiana, and is a son of Lemuel J. and Diana (Steele) Matthews. The family was founded in America by two brothers, John and Will Matthews, who came from England during the Colonial period and settled in the Virginia plantations. One of these brothers, John Matthews, was a soldier of the War of the Revolution, following the close of which he was awarded a tract of bounty land, which lies in what is now the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. His son, William Matthews, resided near Roanoke, Virginia, where he owned a plantation and was one of the prominent men of his locality. His son, Edward Matthews, the grandfather of William S. Matthews, was an adventurous youth who, after securing a good education in his native State of Virginia, traveled into the new country of Kentucky, and then made his way to Indiana, where he settled on a tract of land in Jennings County, married, and became one of the prominent a! nd substantial men of his community. Lemuel J. Matthews was born on his father’s farm in Jennings County, in which community he was reared and educated, and there passed his entire life in farming and raising fine livestock. He was a man of ability and character, and one who had and deserved the respect of his fellow-citizens. He married Miss Diana Steele, of Indiana, and they became the parents of seven children. William S. Matthews attended the public schools of Jennings County, following which he pursued a course in the normal school at Terre Haute and during the next ten years was a teacher in the rural schools of Jennings County. During this period he farmed during the summer months and in his spare time applied himself to the study of law, being admitted to the bar in 1892. Settling at North Vernon, he built up an excellent practice and served a term in the office of county attorney, and in 1922 was appointed postmaster, during the administration of President H! arding. He still carries on an extensive law practice and is justly accounted one of the thorough and reliable attorneys of Jennings County, where he occupies a high place in the profession and is a valued member of the Fourth District Bar Association, the Jennings County Bar Association, the Indian, State Bar Association and the American Bar Association. He still occupies the position of postmaster and is giving his fellow-citizens excellent service. He has been active in the Republican Party since 1886, and for eight years was county chairman of the organization. During the World war Mr. Matthews was made chairman of the last four Liberty Loan committees for Jennings County, which he assisted materially in putting over the top. He is a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and the Modern Woodmen of America, and his religious connection is with the Methodist Church at North Vernon. Mr. Matthews married. Miss Phoebe E. Stearns, a member of an old and honore! d Indiana family, and they became the parents of three children: Homer L., Fred S. and one who is deceased. Mrs. Matthews is active in the work of the Methodist Church.

I am not researching this family, just thought I would share. I do not know anymore about these families or these surnames. Typed by Lora Radiches: Surnames in this biography are: O’Shea, Fitzgerald, Smith, Kelley, Moses, WILLIAM FITZGERALD, Sr. A member of the Indiana bar for more than forty-five years, the career of William Fitzgerald, Sr., deceased, serves as an illustration -of the fact that no other occupation than the law, save agricultural and banking pursuits, strikes so deeply into the roots of the commonwealth But neither of the latter presents the latitude for moral digression, for intricate and questionable interpretation, vouchsafed the learned disciple of legal science. It is for this reason that the man of principle, of steady application and unswervable purpose leads in the matter of really superior compensation, and like considerations prevailed in the career of Mr. Fitzgerald, who had the profound respect and esteem of the people of North Vernon and Jennings County. William Fitzgerald was born on a farm in Stark County, Ohio, in 1860, a son of John and Honora (O’Shea) Fitzgerald. His parents, natives of Ireland, came to the United States as a young married couple and took up their residenc! e in Stark County, Ohio, where John Fitzgerald engaged in agricultural pursuits. Later he moved to Indiana, and here passed the remainder of a long and honorable life. William Fitzgerald was a child when brought to Indiana by his parents and here completed his education in the common schools and the normal school at Ladoga, Indiana. He then began teaching school, and in his spare time applied himself to the study of law, principally in the office of Hon. Alonzo G. Smith, later attorney general of Indiana, at North Vernon. Admitted to the bar in 1884, he continued to teach school until 1885, when he settled down to the practice of his profession at North Vernon, where he became one of the legal bulwarks of the county, his age, important services, fine personal appearance and well-stored mind contributing to a whole of great practical importance to the community. He was admitted to practice in the Supreme Court of Indiana, the Appellate Court and the United States District Cou! rt and was the leading member of the Jennings County bar, and the oldest member in point of service, having practiced for forty-five years continuously. He was a member of- the Indiana State Bar association, the Jennings County Bar Association and the American Bar Association, and had so numerous important business, civic and fraternal connections. During the World war he took a very active part in assisting the various drives and campaigns for war bonds. As an attorney Mr. Fitzgerald had a thorough knowledge of the technicalities of law and he their application, as undertaken by the general rather than the special practitioner. Clear and logical in presenting a case to a jury, he was keen in locating the weak points in the armor of an antagonist, and three score years and ten did not rob him of a commanding presence, eloquence of word and gesture, and fine grasp of the amenities and obligations of his profession. His efforts brought wealth and high social standing in their ! train, and he included among his friends many prominent men in various walks of life throughout the county. While he was not a seeker of public preferment, he was at all times cognizant of the duties of citizenship, and for four years served in the capacity of city attorney of North Vernon. Mr. Fitzgerald married Miss Lida Kelley, a native of Canada, and to this union there were born two children: Mabel, a graduate of St. Mary of the Woods, who is now the wife of Edward Moses, of North Vernon; and William Jr., a graduate of the North Vernon High School, the University of Notre Dame and the law department of Georgetown University, Washington, D. C., who is now engaged in the practice of his profession at North Vernon. William Fitzgerald, Sr., died June 28, 1930, ripe in years and the respect and esteem of his fellow men.

A map of Jennings County that shows the location of cemeteries is available from the Chamber of Commerce. The map is $2.00, and an additional $1.00 should cover the S/H. Does anyone know how to find out, or what agency to go to, who was buried in a Catholic Church cemetery. There is no stone on three graves in the Huber plot. The church has no record that we know of since we have no names. One name could be a Jacob or John Huber. Another lady has already helped me tremendously with my research so I thought I would try again. She helped me gain proof that my ancestor had lived with his mother in Jennings Co. Therefore, I know that she came to the US at some point. Now I am trying to find out who else in the family, if anyone, came with him. Also, was there a place where immigrants had to register when they came and settled in a new country? Thanks so much in advance for any help that you can give. Carlene
