Is my face red - I do have a copy of the certificate of death for Nettie Couchman nee Nettie Waughtel in Vernon, Indiana. Wife of Ben Couchman, youngest child of James & Nancy nee Keel Waughtel. It states she died in Jennings County IN on 19 August 1898 with the cause of death as Meningitia. Signed by James H. Green, Physician (underlined). Funeral Home is blaank, Name of Cemetery is blank, date of burial is blankk as is address of funeral home and cemetery. This was issued to me September 4, 1998 stating it is recorded book no 4-6 page 30. On the back is written - Occupation: Farmer's wife / Birthplace: Indiana / Father: George Waughtel Father is incorrect as she was daughter of James Waughtel Sr. James Waughtel Sr did have a son George who married Martha Catherine Petree and I have no children shown for them, so they may have had a daughter Nettie. I don't know. I don't think I have ever seen George in a census to know if he had children or not. I also found another item from an older newspaper indicating she (Nettie Waughtel Couchman) was buried in Springer Graveyard. I would like to thank everyone who has written me the address for the church mentioned in an earlier e-mail. I have written them and now must wait our good old postal service <grin>. Terry, Could you please guide me in the direction on where I could find death information in Jennings Co. for the years 1837 or 1838? Probate was Nov. 1838. Thanks. Doris Challis

Bonita, You found one Truman marriage for me recently and advised you would look for other surnames. I am interested in Patterson/Pattison, Turman or Tremain and Stout marriages after the years that are on the Indiana marriage database. Thanks in advance. Jeanette
Bonita, I just re-read your message and that you are with a funeral home in North Vernon. I do not know who had the services, nor where he is buried, but he lived in Jennings County to the best of my knowledge. My grandfather was born there in 1875. Anyhow this would be for my great grandfather John Waughtel who died in May 1932. His 2nd wife (his 1st wife was my great grandmother and she died in Marion County, IN and to this date I cannot find where she is buried although I believe on the grounds at the hospital and I have gone round and round with them <grin> to no avail) was Eliza Ann Keith Waughtel and she died in 1889. Should you have anything on John Waughtel I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you so much. Antoinette waughtel@oz.net Antoinette Waughtel Sorensen wrote: > Thank you so much Bonita. Thanks Terry for reminding me of the death certificate. Guess that is my next move <grin> Will do that. Later I got to thinking that Will might be William who was a twin to Mary (I think) and she married a VanCamp. Will have to check into that one further also. Sometimes I just get excited and carried away. Antoinette waughtel@oz.net TerryEngel wrote: > The paper in Columbus is the Republic. Antoinette, The address for the Friends Church is: Sandcreek Azalia Friends Church 13275 S 350 E Elizabethtown IN 47232 You also asked about funeral home records. If a funeral home in Jennings County had her service, you will probably not find anything that early. I am office manager of a funeral home in North Vernon that has been in existence for over 100 years. Our records begin about 1903, but information for the first years is very slim. Merely the name of the deceased, the date of death, who ordered the service, sometimes the casket model and cemetery. We also have all the records remaining for a funeral home that was in Vernon for many years, but those records begin about 1928. The paper in Columbus is the Republic. I don't know about the Friends Church in Etown, but I can ask some of my friendly natives. As for the funeral home, were you fortunate enough to get a death certificate? They usually have info on the funeral home. I know that one of the funeral homes records is in the library, but I've never seen anyone I'm looking for listed there. I'll let you know if I see anything about them. Terry

In looking over some old 100 Years Ago columns from the North Vernon Sun and this particular one of September 1, 1998 for August 31, 1898 was the obit of the above Nettie Waughtel Couchman, wife of Ben Couchman and youngest child of James & Nancy (Keel) Waughtel of the Hege/Scipio area. Stating that she died at the family home on August 19, 1898 and that nephews of the deceased acted as pallbearers - all Waughtel surname - Ferd, Charles, John, Clem, Will and Scott. I have heard of all but with the exception of Will. Does anyone have any idea where I could get information as to whether the Friends Church in Elizabethtown is still there? If the Columbus Times is still around? Or how I would go about finding the funeral home in charge of the services. I am really curious as to who Will Waughtel may be. I have also recently come upon a Lawrence Waughtel and this seems to be his middle name and on the certificate of death, it has been torn and the first name not legible to read. Might be Connor or Homer or something similar. Will appreciate deeply any help given. Thank you for reading this. Nettie Waughtel Couchman was my great aunt, sister to my great grandfather John Waughtel. Clem Waughtel was a brother to my grandfather Rome Waughtel. Antoinette waughtel@oz.net

Donna, We corresponded many years ago about our mutual Miles and Clarkson lines. If I remember correctly, you were still here in Indiana at that time. My brother is Tom Taylor who has been in contact with you in more recent years. Here is what I found for you: Ulyssus H. Miles - Lulu M. More 18 Dec 1895 Book 1887/1895, page 540 James L. Miles - Louise Elliott 01 Dec 1900 Book 8, page 365 There is no Willis Miles listed. However, could this be "Willis and Sadie?": William W. Miles - Sarah Clarkson 07 June 1866 Book 7, page 3 I found no Martha E. Miles after 1870.
