The list of veterans transcribed from Montgomery's history of the county was very helpful. Thanks to Eloine Chestnut for all the work of transcribing over a thousand records. There is another source for information about the Quakers in Jay County (and elsewhere in Indiana, as well) who served in the Civil War that I'd like to recommend: Indiana Quakers Confront the Civil War Jacquelyn S. Nelson Indianapolis: Indiana Historical Society, 1991 She says that 20 Quakers from Jay County entered into military service, despite the strong traditional stand of the Quakers against war. The anti-slavery feeling among Indiana Quakers was strong, so much so that many of them joined the Union Army to help eradicate it. One of these was William G. Hopkins, my gggrandfather.
