    3. Here is a searchable site at the University of Michigan that may be of interest to some. It contains books and periodicals from the 19th century that have been scanned - you don't see a transcription, you see the real thing. One of the items I looked at was an Ohio Gazetteer and Business Directory for 1861 - very interesting! http://www.umdl.umich.edu/moa/index.html Annette DeHoff netandmike@nni.com (Currently searching for Jeffries in VA>NC>TN>AL>OH>IN)

    3. hi, I am new to this mailing list. I'm Searching for VERONA/ WILLIAMS/ MOLLE (or DEMOLLE) families in Jay County. All my ancestors were Belgian glass workers who immigrated to Indiana from ~ 1885 to 1895, moving from town to town, in or near Jay county. My great grandfather was John Phillip VERONA and my great grandmother was Alexina WILLIAMS-MOLLE-VERONA-PIERRE; she married 3 times :-) We know that they lived in Hartford City, IN in 1895, Gas City in 1897, and Alexandria in 1900 (from the 1900 census). Does anyone know of living descendants of Belgian immigrants with the above surnames, currently living in Jay county?? ttyl, Matt VERONA (mtverona@flash.net) phone:281-343-1784, fax:281-545-9105

    3. I wanted to send you a portion of an email I received regarding the Indiana Pioneer Cenetary Restoration Project. Part of this project involves petitioning the Indiana General Assembly. I know one of my ancestors, Achor Wright who lived in Jay County much of his life, lies buried in an old abandoned cemetary outside of Bloomfield. The pictures I have seen of the state of the cemetary make me very sad, but it disturbs me to think that someday someone might be permitted to completley eliminate it and plunk a parking lot on it. Remote? I don't know. If any one is at all concerned, please click on the URL below, print out and sign the petition. While I wouldn't normally use this list for any political purpose, I thought this project was relevant to us all as Hoosier genealogist and might interest some of you. An edited portion of the email I received is below. Please note that to date there have been no signatures from Jay County. Perhaps thats partially my fault for not imforming you about the project earlier. "The Indiana Pioneer Cemetery Restoration Project (INPCRP) petitions urging the Indiana General Assembly to act decisively to protect our vanishing pioneer cemeteries are still streaming in. I want to thank all of you who ave taken the time to print out the Petition from the INPCRP website at >http://www.rootsweb.com/~inpcrp. > >Thought you might be interested in a current tally of the number of >signatures received so far. 3. George; maybe this will help. Here are all the "Fiers" appearing on the 1860 Jay County census. They are in alpha order, but the records show the census page and line number so you can recontruct the household records. NOTE: there is an entry for a James C.Fiers age 6...could this be your James Coleman Fiers? If so, these records should give you a good idea of his father. Cheers!! 3. The list of veterans transcribed from Montgomery's history of the county was very helpful. Thanks to Eloine Chestnut for all the work of transcribing over a thousand records. There is another source for information about the Quakers in Jay County (and elsewhere in Indiana, as well) who served in the Civil War that I'd like to recommend: Indiana Quakers Confront the Civil War Jacquelyn S. Nelson Indianapolis: Indiana Historical Society, 1991 She says that 20 Quakers from Jay County entered into military service, despite the strong traditional stand of the Quakers against war. The anti-slavery feeling among Indiana Quakers was strong, so much so that many of them joined the Union Army to help eradicate it. One of these was William G. Hopkins, my gggrandfather.
