Hi All, This came through Genealogy Records Service, a free newsletter distributed via e-mail. I thought some of you might be interested. Enjoy! How to Figure Birthdates >From "Compendium of Historical Sources" by Ronald Bremer Often tombstones have a notation such as: "Died 15 June 1872, Aged 77 years, 10 months, 3 days." How do you determine the correct birthdate? First of all, make the sequence read days, months, years: thus 15-6-1872 minus 3-10-77. Since the 10th month cannot be subtracted from the sixth, borrow 12 months from the year of death, making the year 1871 and the month 18. (If you borrow from the month to make days, borrow 30 days, even though the month might have 31.) The equation now looks like: 15-18-1871 minus 3-10-77. Begin the calculations on the right hand side. Therefore, 77 years from 1871 means that the person was born in 1794. Subtracting 10 months from 18 gives you eight months, or August. So the correct date of birth was 12 August 1794. Later, Darlene
Valerie, No question is a dumb question....always ask. The information has been added to the Jackson County INGenWeb Genealogy Homepage at http://www.rootsweb.com/~injackso/ If you have any more questions.....just holler. Darlene
Darlene: Sorry if this is a dumb question but, where are you "adding" these? Hi All, I have added information concerning Jackson County Gen. Soc. More is coming! Darlene
My name is Darrol Pierson. I recently learned that a 5 great grand father lived and died in Redding Twp, Jackson Co., and that my 4 great grand father also lived there before moving to Monroe Co., IA. Nathan Gilbert died in 1841 and is buried in Reddington Cemetery along with his wife. William Gilbert, my 4ggf, is in 1850 census in Jackson Co., but by 1860 he appears in Monroe Co, IA. For the last several weeks I have been studying the Jackson Co. descendants of Nathan Gilbert. Among the surnames that become involved are Baldwin, Davis, McClintock, Shannon, Kovener, and several others. Among the things I am hoping to find are letters sent between Gilberts in Monroe Co., IA and those in Jackson Co., IN. I plan to search Jackson Co newspapers for interesting biographical info about the Gilbert family and the various descendants. I was wondering if the Jackson County Genealogy Society is still publishing Genealogy Jottings? If so, what is it's publication frequency? Are the books published by the Jackson County Genealogy Society still for sale (ie the 1989 Redding Township Cemetery book). I look forward to hearing from all of you. Darrol Pierson [email protected]

Yes, they still have the cemetery books for sale. Information has been mailed to me regarding the JaCGS; which I should be receiving today or tomorrow. I am going to have a webpage devoted to the society posted in the next few days. May be the first part of the week. So, keep checking back for additions to the Jackson County website. Hi Kate My husbands names in Jackson Co Ind. were Julian from Penn, Richardson, Trueblood from Pasquotank Co NC, Weddle from Germany, and Cook or Coop. I see someone else is working on the Weddle name. I will try to post them in the next day or two. Susan
Hi, I am trying to sort out the connections of all of these families as they migrated from Hawkins County, TN to Jackson County, IN around 1819-1820. They spread to Monroe County, Brown County, Washington County, etc. My ancestor is William Curry born between 1780 & 1790 in North Carolina. Marries an unknown (to me) woman and has at least three children that I know of. He second marries Nancy Wallen Weddel (born 1773 and widow of Elias Weddel). She and Elias had 11 children. William and Nancy have one child together, my ancestor, Elijah Curry born 1816 in TN. Elijah Curry marries Mary Richards (daughter of Michael Richards and Charity Hubbard). I have in my database a Charity Curry and a Mary Curry who both marry Weddles in TN. Are they sisters? Are they related to my William Curry or to the other Elijah Curry who also shows up in Jackson County in the 1830 census? I have compiled quite abit of second-hand information on these families. It is unverified by me, but I will share it if anyone wishes. Please let me know if you have any information on these families. Thanks, Lisa Alexander [email protected]

LISA, So you do Hawkins Co TN and WALLEN research? My husband has a WALLEN line. If you're interested email me privately and we'll chat that way since it is not relative to Jackson County. BUT, I do have some info that may or may not help with your WEDDLE/WALLEN connection: Do you know Dwight Vidito? He is a WEDDLE researcher. We corresponded way back in 1992. Here is an excerpt from a letter: "But looking thrumy WEDDLE file I have found some WALLEN'S in this line and this WEDDLE line was in Brown and Jackson Counties in Indiana at one point." "John WEDDLE (1739-1799) from Weisboden, Germany and Hawkins Co TN was married to Mary WALLING (no information on her)." "Three of John's children married WALLEN sisters: Elias WEDDLE Sr b. about 1772, m. Nancy WALLEN, in 1793. She was b. 31 May 1775, d. 21 Dec 1850. George WEDDLE b. 1783 m. ? WALLEN Daniel WEDDLE, b. 10 Feb 1782 m. Mary WALLEN. Thomas W. WEDDLE, b. 2 Feb 1776, d. 20 Aug 1838 in Brown Co IN, m. Rosannah WALLEN 10 May 1804 in Hawkins Co TN." Mr. Vidito says he thinks the above information came out of a book call the JOHN WEDDLE book, by Elizabeth MUETING. If you're interested in Mr. Vidito's address let me know. Hope this helps! I read your welcome message. My name is Susan Dorris, age 57, 3 kids, 5 grand kids, and there's 4 generations of us here on the farm. I have been doing genealogy since the late 'sixties'. My mother in law's people, the Julians came here from Jackson Co. Ind. I have been there doing research just one time. I was surprised to learn that the birth and death records were kept at the hospital. I think it might have been at Brownsville? The marriage records were at the court house. I think the wills were too but don't remember for sure. I am so glad to see a 'list mail' for Jackson Co. Ind. I like to drive over to the library at Evansville a couple times a summer. I find material's there I don't find available to me here in southern ILL. I posted my husbands surnames a couple of days ago so won't do it again. Susan
Hi Susan In a message dated 7/12/98 2:09:26 PM Eastern Daylight Time, [email protected] writes: << I think it might have been at Brownsville? >> You're probably speaking of Brownstown. The library in Evansville is the Willard Library. Is this the one you go to? If so, I hear its a very good place to do genealogy research. Haven't been there myself, yet. Thanks for the tidbits on where records are located in Jackson County. I haven't gotten that far yet, and hope to have information up on the website concerning where records can be obtained soon. Thanks for replying to my message. Darlene

Hi Jackson Co Rooters, I would like to take a moment to welcome each of you to the Jackson County INGenWeb E-Mail or Discussion List. This is a new List, and so far about 10 people are signed up. If you're familiar with how Lists work then you can skip on down to the 3rd paragraph, otherwise you may want to read this: The List is for discussion regarding genealogy and history in Jackson County, IN. That means, if you have information you would like to share on your family, the area where your ancestors lived or help another Jackson County Rooter then by all means send in an e-mail to the List. Or, if you come across a genealogy hint of some kind that might help someone else ..send that in too. My philosophy concerning how the List shall be maintained is this Most of us or maybe none of us live in Jackson County. The List has been created to help those people researching here. Use the List! That is the only way you can be assured that you are using every avenue the Jackson County, Indiana USGenWeb Homepage provides. Someone may have an answer to your question, and then again maybe not. That is the chance you take. I also believe that we should all be friendly and courteous to one another. If you want to tell us about your g-g-grandmother then do so, or an experience that you have been rewarded with in your search for your Jackson County ancestors. I don't know if you're familiar with the word "flame-war" or "flaming", but this means that people are discourteous to one another when they respond to another person on a List. I will not tolerate any of this type of behavior, and you will be unsubscribed from the List if this problem arises. I hope that you understand why I must have this rule for the List. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me about this. Now, do you want to know who I am? Well, I'm just a regular old person (well, maybe kinda young) like yourself. I've done genealogy for 20 years. I'm not an expert by any stretch of the imagine, though!! I am fairly new to Jackson County research so you will have to bear with me while I search my way through the county to find information to aid you in your search. I also maintain the Jackson County Indiana USGenWeb Genealogy Homepage, and the Clinton County Indiana USGenWeb Genealogy Homepage. I'm a fanatic about genealogy and love doing webpages for both my counties almost as much as I love genealogy. Oh and sometimes I rattle on and don't make to much sense, so if I start doing that just stop me and ask me what I'm talking about. <VBG> So far the only family that I am researching in Jackson County is MIZE. Well, now it's your turn. Introduce yourself to the list. Sit down a spell and tell us all you know! (that's my southern roots speaking!!) If you have questions, comments or suggestions for the Jackson County homepage let me know those too. And, if you don't hear from me right away .I'm not ignoring you. Just send me a gentle reminder.
