Dear All, As most of you know, Darlene Anderson sent out a request last weekend to find out if anyone wanted to take over coordinating the Jackson County INGenWeb site and the Jackson County mailing list. I responded to Darlene last Sunday that I would be willing to take over these responsibilities. With lots of patient help from Darlene, I think most of the work involved in transferring everything from Darlene to me is done, with the exception of some minor work involved with the GenConnect pages for the queries. I am looking forward to coordinating the county pages and the mailing list as a way to promote genealogy research and as a way to give back something in return for all the help I've received from others over the years. In fact, many of the people on this mailing list are people that have helped me advance my own family research. Please let me know if you notice any problems with the Jackson County pages. And, if you have suggestions, comments, or additions to make, please feel free to let me know. The pages have really grown over the last couple of years, but I know there's lots more that can still be done with them. Sincerely, Dolores Lombardi

Hi All, I've just subscribed to the Jackson Co,IN maillist. I've dropped two of my other unproduction email-lists and thought it was time to see what this one can do. Here is a brief bio: An old Sonoma Co,CA County History (1881) shows a bio of my LEVI DAVIS as: "DAVIS, LEVI. Was born in Jackson County, Indiana, March 21, 1822. At the age of seventeen years he settled with his parents in Warren County, Illinois, and there resided till the Fall of 1840 when his parents moved to Green County, Missouri, and there he commenced farming. Here he married REBECCA LAKEY on January 6, 1842. In 1852 Mr. Davis crossed the plains to California by ox-team and arrived in Petaluma on the 29th of August of that year, and first settled near Liberty school-house in that township where he farmed until 1871. In this year he moved to his present residence near Forrestville and occupies three hundred acres of land on which he raises wheat and carp. His family consists of JOHN VALENTINE, JOSEPH, JACOB, CHARLES NUTON, CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS, PHOEBE, REBECCA ZARRILDA, and LYDIA ANN." Levi had a cousin also named Levi. This cousin Levi married a Matilda CLINE in Illinois. The 1820 nor 1830 Jackson Co,IN Fed Census don't offer much help: 1820: Thomas Davis (oldest) 101111 00101 Zacharia Davis 200010 10010 Joseph Davis 100100 20100 John Davis 000100 20100 1830 James Davis John Davis Joseph Davis William Davis Thomas Davis Can anyone find a tie in with my Levi? =========================================================== LAKEY/BALES/DAVIS/HADLEY/ See my genealogical webpage at: www.afamily.net =========================================================== $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ Impeach THEM...see www.afamily.net $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Steve & Jane Combs [email protected] Being in California doesn't help much. But I hope someone will keep the work on going. It has helped me with looking up the Combs line. Steve
The USGW is divided up by states and then by counties. The counties are hosted or coordinated by volunteers. Jackson County will continue with a new coordinator. The information posted on the website at this time will stay intact. The new coordinator will add their own perspective of the county and genealogy information and most likely will gather support from those of you on this list. So for those of you who are concerned about the county disappearing....that won't happen. If I can answer any other questions please just let me know. Darlene Anderson
I sincerely hope you do not drop this Jackson Co. site. I recently had an answer to a post and found many relatives that I hadn't known about. My father's family was born in Jackson Co., but I had had very little information. I wish I could help, but I am a "newbie" both in genealogy and computers (especially internet workings), and being in California, know nothing about Indiana. I have admired those of you who host web sites and thank you for a job well done. Again, I hope Jackson Co. survives and prospers. Your not giving up already are you? I really liked having a web site at Jackson Co. Ind. I hope someone close to Jackson Co. will take it over. I'm looking for information on John H. (possibly Harry or Harrison) SMITH, born in May 1864, and his family. I found them in the 1900 MI Census and it says that both he and his parents were born in Indiana. I have nothing else to go on, but hope he might connect with your SMITH's. He was a painter/paper hanger, as was my grandfather after him; so it may have been a family trade. I sure would appreciate hearing from you! Karon

Hi Everyone! Last week I got into a conversation on the Virginia Roots list about the circuit-riding preacher, Lorenzo Dow. Lots of us have a Lorenzo Dow 'Somebody' in our data. Since I have a lot of information about the 'original' Lorenzo Dow, they asked if I would post a web page about him. He was born in 1777 in Coventry, CT. Well, I ran home from work and put up the Lorenzo Dow page after supper! I hope you find it interesting. He was something! I can just see him jumping out of a church window onto a horse and riding away shouting that he would be back one year from the day! He did, too! The site is: http://www.acun.com/dentons The link to the article about Lorenzo Dow is about half way down the first page. I hope you enjoy the stories! Blessings! Joan, Thank you so much for the information on the Allen family. At this point I am unable to tie it to the James T. Allen of my line. I will keep your information and as I gather further Allen information it may just tie in. Dennis
Hello from Virginia... .My Great Grandmother, who died in 1942, was named Maggie Leslie. Her second husband was named James Allen and she married him after being widowed in 1893. Her 1st husband was George Cornelius Swift of Seymour, Indiana - Jackson County. She had 2 children by George ( one was my grandmother) James Allen was a widower - with children - when he and Maggie married. I think he worked for an insurance company and they moved to Vincennes, Indiana. In the early 1900 s he was transferred to Norfolk, V a. He and Maggie had one child, a son named James Funston Allen. Is any of this pertinent to your research ? Sincerely, Joan Uhlar

Hello Kate Rooks, Clearspring, as it is now called, is in (Owen Township) the western portion of Jackson County, IN. It is west of Brownstown and is north of U. S. 50. Yes, there is a listing of cemeteries and an index in the OWEN TOWNSHIP CEMETERIES, JACKSON COUNTY, INDIANA book. Your 2nd G-grandmother's name ( Caroline WILLIAMS) is not included in the Clearspring Cemetery listing or in Owen Township Cemeteries, Jackson Co. IN. There are several members of the WILLIAMS family buried in the Bagwell/Conner/Mitchell Cemetery of Owen Twp. The Jackson County Genealogical Society, Inc. has compiled cemetery listings of Owen Township and as well as other townships. County Cemetery and other local genealogical source material can be purchased at the JCGS Library or by mail order. The JCGS people to contact about possible unmarked burials in Owen Township are: Attn: Ruth Fox and/or Wilma Ping Jackson Co Genealogical Society, Inc. 415 1/2 Poplar Street Brownstown, IN 47220 Phone: (812) 358-2118 Best wishes in tracking down your Jackson County ancestor. :-) Hopefully this will help you with your research.
