    1. [INJACKSO-L] Possible Useful Link for Jackson County Researchers
    2. Some of you on this list probably have Jackson County ancestors who came from the Stokes County/Forsyth County area of North Carolina. If so, you might want to check out the Jarvis Family page at the following URL: http://cgibin1.erols.com/fmoran/index.html I found some useful information on this page and I suspect some of you will too. If this site appeals to you, you may also want to subscribe to the recently- established Stokes County/Forsyth County mailing list. 1. [INJACKSO-L] Recent Updates to the Jackson County, Indiana GenWeb Site
    2. Recently posted surnames (since 11/23/98): Acton, Baughman, Bruner/Brunner, Hirtzel, Hubbard, Ireland, Jacobs, Jaynes, Moritz, Owens, Pheral, Riley, Thompson, Weddel/Weddell/Weddle, and Wilcut. Recently posted queries (since 11/23/98): Alexander (in the Wilson Marriages query of 12/15), Brown, Bryant, Coulter, Criss, Cunningham, Davidson, Draperscott, Eastin, Fields, Gardner, Grant, Gregg, Hall, Hurley, Jaynes, Jessee, Kimball, Kindred, King, Lee, Olds, Pickett, Raines, Ray, Stanfield, Thorp, Wakefield, Walters, Ward, Whorly, Wible, and Wilcut. Also, there is a query or two about the location of a town named Mooney. Within the next couple of weeks, I am going to start moving all of the old queries to the automated board so they are easier to search. Before I get started, I will send out an e-mail message to everyone who is on the mailing list for receiving automatic notification of new queries so you can unsubscribe yourself if you don't want to receive notification of these older queries. Something else you might want to check out is a new page on the Indiana GenWeb site where you can search all of the archived e-mail that has been sent to the various Indiana county mailing lists, including the INJACKSO-L list. The main page is at at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ingenweb/index.html The link to the mailing list search engine is at the bottom of the second table from the top of the page (under the waving Indiana flag) and is called, "Indiana Mailing List Search Engine." If you want to go to the search engine page directly, here is the URL: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ingenweb/inlists.html Once again, Beverly Weddle has gone out of her way to provide some great Jackson County information. She recently sent me a listing of all known cemeteries in Jackson County by township and it has now been posted at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~injackso/cem_listall.html Thanks a bunch, Beverly!! Also, we now have automated, searchable boards for posting Jackson County biographies, obituaries, wills, and military pension information. You can link to these boards from the main page of the Jackson County GenWeb site, or go to them directly with the following URL's: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/In/JacksonBios http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/In/JacksonObits http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/In/JacksonWill http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/In/JacksonPens Please feel free to start using these boards. I think they're pretty straightforward to use, however if you run into any problems using them, please let me know. I'm going to give it a whirl myself and try condensing down some of the military pension information I got from the National Archives for one of my ancestors and post it on the Military Pensions page. It's possible to set up similar pages for bible records and deeds. I'm willing to get those types of pages set up too if people think they will use them. Let me know what you think. Well, that wraps up my update. Happy holidays to all of you and good luck with your research! Dolores Lombardi Jackson County Coordinator for INGenWeb

    3. Hello All, My Mother's roots are in Jackson-Jennings counties of Indiana. She has asked me to see if I could find any information regarding her family in the area. Mom's maiden name is Dowd. Her full name is Katherine Virginia Dowd. Her brother's name is Harry S. Dowd. They are the children of Kenneth Dowd (b.1897 d. 8/43) and Jemima May Stewart (b. 5/16 in Washington IN, d. 8/46) Kenneth Dowd had a brother, Fletcher Dowd. Fletcher ran a funeral home in North Vernon and both worked in a family run furniture store at one time. The father of Kenneth and Fletcher would be Harry H. Dowd and Mom thinks his wife's name was Jane. That is all we have on that side of the family. Jemima Stewart was the daughter of Joe Stewart b. Jennings county, 1878 and Sarah Sade Shaw b. Jennings county 1880. Joe Stewart had a sister named Bessie. Sarah Shaw had a sister named Eldie. Joe Stewart was an engineer on the B&O line running through Seymour for 50 years. He ran the Cincinnati - St. Louis run on the passenger train "The Diplomat" through the end of WWII. The parents of Joseph Stewart were Mr, & Mrs William Stewart The Parents of Sade (Sara) Shaw were Mr. & Mrs. Benjiman Shaw. We have no more information. Are any of these names known to anyone on this list? Any and all help would be greatly appreciated! Mike O'Rear [email protected]

    2. Lisa
    3. Hi! My name is Lisa Stalnaker Hellwig, and most of my semi-immediate family (my mom's parents and grandparents) came from Jackson County, IN. Specifically around Vallonia and Seymour. My grandmother's family came from Medora. I've got my grandfather's family pretty well documented, except for some cousins, and I've got huge gaping holes in my grandmother's family tree! My family names are McElfresh, Grider, Hamilton, Cunningham, Crockett, Doerr and a few other McElfresh cousins I can't remember off the top of my head. I just wanted to introduce myself to the list - I was so pleased to find a mailing list for Jackson County genealogies! Thanks Lisa (descended from Tom, Sim and Lawrence McElfresh.) -- _______________________________________________________ "Hope is the ability to hear the music of the future.
