    3. There was an 1890 census of the U.S. but unfortunately almost the entire census of the U.S. burnt up in a fire. There were a very few sections that were able to be saved, but Indiana wasn't one of them. -Cindy

    2. Dr. Julie Clifton Laughner
    3. I am researching my Clifton family, who came to Jackson Co., IN from KY. My g-g-g-grandfather, Alfred Burdett "A.B." Clifton, came to Jackson Co. in about 1860. I believe there were other Cliftons already there by that time. If anyone has any information on these people, or if you have access to the 1850 census and can tell me if there were other Cliftons there already, I would really appreciate it. Why did people come from KY to Jackson Co. before the Civil War? What was the draw? Thanks, Julie Clifton Laughner

    1. [INJACKSO-L] New Surnames on Jackson County, Indiana Page
    2. Hi, Everybody-- The following are surnames that I've just added to the Jackson County, Indiana Surname page: Baute, Clampitt, Claycamp, Glasson, Keller, Kleekamp, Lane, Lueck, McConnell, Martin, Miller, Mitchell, Montgomery, Quade, Steel/Steele, Stout, Weber. I really fell behind in getting these names posted, so my apologies to everyone for taking so long to get this done. Also, if I somehow missed posting your name, please let me know and I will try to take care of it right away. Jim Oberman has graciously offered to do lookups in the 1860 census, so his name's been added to the Lookups page. Also, Bernie Cullen provided a new mailing address. She's listed on the Surnames pages for a couple of names and also on the Lookups page. If you've been trying to reach her, but not succeeding, her new address is [email protected] There have been many recent postings to the Queries page, so many that I'm not going to list the surnames this time. Please make sure you take a look, however. I've also noticed lots of activity on this mailing list...that's great! Good luck to all of you with your research. --Dolores Lombardi Coordinator, Jackson County INGenWeb Site

    2. Hi, everyone. Just wanted to let you know that I'm trying to find out what caused the recent rash of spam (junk mail) that we received on this list. I've forwarded these messages to RootsWeb so they can look at them. From the response they sent me, it seems that sometimes the people sending these messages figure out a way to send them to the list without going through RootsWeb. I'm not sure if that's the case for the messages we received. You should know RootsWeb's "spam detective" program has stopped a number of other junk messages from hitting our list this week. I noticed that the offending messages all started out with "{not a subscriber}" in the Subject line, so that might be something to watch for on future messages if you don't want to waste your time opening up junk messages. I will give you an update about the situation if I find out anything more. --Dolores Lombardi

    1. [INJACKSO-L] Schwein
    2. Ruby Coleman
    3. The 1988 book A Composite History of Jackson Co., IN contains a genealogy of the Schwein family on pages 451 and 452. I have written to the Jackson Co. Genealogical Society to determine who submitted the genealogy regarding this family in Germany, but apparently nobody knows the origins. If anybody has more information on the family or a contact, please let me know. The immigrant, Philipp Wilhelm "William" Schwein, was born 3 August 1798 in Sonneberg, Hessen-Nassau, son of Wilhelm Conrad Schwein and Christina Elisabetha Bach. He married as his second wife Maria Elisabetha "Elizabeth" Hermann, b. 14 Jan. 1809 at Naurod, Hessen-Nassau. She was the daughter of Johann Georg Herrmann of Naurod and Maria Elisabetha Ruf of Auringen. Thanks ....
