I've already written the Huntington Co clerk to ask about the will records. I think I'll call them to see what they say about estates files. It sounds like they have "probate packets", like some other locales did in this era. Do they have lists of these probate cases that they can search, or does one have to rummage thru the collection? The latter case is sometimes a hard thing for a local clerk's office to deal with (a lot of time and trouble). Thanks ==mwh
Posted on: Huntington County, Indiana - Queries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/In/Huntington/10724 Surname: ------------------------- The County Clerk's Office, there in Huntington County, has, stored in the basement near the boilers, the original executors files which went with the wills. These include all sorts of legal papers - inventories, sale bills, various debts that were owed, and so forth. They date from about 1865 and are for both estates where there were wills and for those who died intestate (without a will). I would try writing them and asking if there is an estate file for the person that you are interested in, in addition to a will. With Best wishes - Andrew White

Who has Will Book A-B? Who could I write to about getting copies of specific wills in these books? Are there other probate records available? I expect some of the people I am looking for died intestate and may have left estates that required probate. Any advice appreciated. Regards, ==mwh mailto: [email protected]

There was a Henry B. Sayler in Huntington in the late 1800s. He was an attorney and a Congressman. You'll find quite a bit about him in the 1879 Huntington County Atlas and History which is available from the county historical society.

Hi folks, Just wanted to give everyone that has my address as [email protected] in their address book a chance to change it to my new address at [email protected] My old ISP has sold out AGAIN so I am going with one that won't be selling out in the near future (at least I hope not!) and hopefully won't have as many problems with the new one either. I also want to apologize if you receive this message more than once, but that just means that we are on different mailing lists together so just hit the delete button to get rid of the duplicates. I have been unsubbing from lists under my usit.net address and subbing again with my new address so I don't miss any of your mail. You are a wonderful bunch of people...thanks for being you! :) I will wait until next week to cancel my usit account so you have a chance to make the change 'cause after I cancel that account, the usit.net mail will bounce higher than a rubber ball. LOL Until that time I can still retrieve mail from them. My next step is to try to contact individuals (Oh my, five years of contacts!). I wish you all well and hope that everyone is finding new leaves in their family trees. You can feel free to check out my website for any familiar names if you wish (The link is at the end of my signature line)...if you find one, give a yell! Hello List, I am seeking the parents and siblings of GEORGE W. BURNETT, born in Indiana, November 15, 1862. I have no idea the county. That was all I could find on census, death certificate, etc. On a tape, made when she was very old, his wife Mary, related this story told to her by GEORGE. George's mother was killed in an accident or died suddenly, when he was an infant. There were other children, don't know ages or how many. George was adopted by Shoemaker/Shumaker?Shoebaker??? He lived with them until the courthouse burned. It destroyed the adoption records. I don't know his age at the time this occurred. He was in Sumner County, Kansas on April 14, 1900. On that day he married Mary M. Bell. George said he couldn't have left if the records were still available for his adoption. Reason unknown. When he left Indiana, he took back his birth name BURNETT, and continued to use it until his death. This is a brick wall. I would really appreciate any help or advise you could provide. If you have any information, you may Email me at [email protected] Thank you in advance for your help. Respectfully yours, Jan
