Another person posted info on my dad from the obit, which of course had his name wrong and so it was posted wrong, but I e-mailed the fellow and gave him the picture I took and then I up loaded it to the findagrave website my self. So you definately will need pictures and obits and death indexes to cross reference, for this. Good luck. If I lived near by I would help but I'm 80 miles away and I am very involved in similar activities here in Randolph County, IN. Andrea

But I don't know how hard it will be to actually do it. Probably not that hard. I went to all of their gardens and took random pictures. Those are the ones you see by "Tombstoner" on findagrave.com. If anybody wants to help me make a transcript, I'd love that. Just put some random names on findagrave.com. Eventually it will get done. I will walk the whole cemetery if I have to. You know, they didn't give me any trouble at all at the cemetery when I asked for where certain people were buried at. I didn't even know the first names of the people I was looking for. If you want to, I will ask them for your grave that you want. I don't see how they can stop anybody from going in there with pen and paper and writing down names. Keep checking findagrave.com for constant updates. Here is the link. http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=cr&CRid=85100&CScn=gardens+of+memory&CSst=17&

Surnames: Jackson, Haley, Goshorn Classification: Biography Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/gh.2ADI/5410 Message Board Post: From Biographical Memoirs of Huntington County, 1901, pages 479-480 Silas W. Jackson, son of Thomas and Hannah Jackson, was born in Clear Creek township, Huntington county, Indiana, March 6, 1848. His educational training embraced such studies as were taught in the district schools during the days of his youth and early manhood, and lately by coming in contact with the world in various business capacities has laid broad and well a foundation upon which a very busy and successful life has been constructed. When twenty years of age Mr. Jackson began working at blacksmithing in a shop near his home, purchased by him for the purpose of learning the trade. He received his first instructions in mechanical work from his hired man, an expert iron worker, and after becoming familiar with the use of tools, he added to his establishment a department for wagon making and general repairing. After conducting a remunerative business for four years, he purchased the farm in Clear Creek township where he now resides, and for two years thereafter devoted his time principally to clearing and otherwise improving the same. This accomplished, he again engaged in blacksmithing and wagon making in a new shop which he built on his farm, and during the fourteen years following carried on a very lucrative business, devoting a part of his time meanwhile to the pursuit of agriculture. At the expiration of the period referred to he discontinued his mechanical work and has since been quite extensively ! engaged in farming and stock raising, meeting with most encouraging results in both enterprises and winning the reputation of one of the most prosperous and progressive men of his class in the township of Clear Creek. Mr. Jackson was united in marriage, November 17, 1872, to Miss Elmina Haley, of Holmes county, Ohio, who has borne him six children: Carrie A., wife of A. H. Goshorn; Izora, who died in infancy; Silas A.; Otto D.; Von E.; anc Carl B. At the present time Mr. Jackson owns a fine farm of one hundred and sixty acres of fertile land, with one hundred and thirty in cultivation. He is a scientific agriculturist, keeping abreast of the times in all matters pertaining to his calling, and by judicious cultivation succeeds in obtaining the largest results from the labor expended. He has already acquired a comfortable competency and ranks with the well-to-do farmers of the county. Devoting himself assidiously to his business interests, he has never exhibited any desire or ambition for official preferment, but is public spirited and ever ready and willing to encourage or aid every good and laudable enterprise. He comes of sturdy and wholesome ancestry, and inherits in a marked degree many of the sterling attributes for which they were noted. His earnestness of purpose and intense desire to live in accord with his highest ideal of right, has had no little influence in moulding the lives and character of those with whom he was associated, and his career as a busy and successful man of affairs is absolutely blameless in the community where he has so long lived and acted his part. As a citizen he commands great esteem, and it is a tribute well deserved to class him with the representative men of Huntington county. Being at the very meridian of life, with vigorous physical powers and mental attributes of no mean order, he bids fair to reach the advanced age of his father and to continue to be in the future as he has been in the past--a power for good in the community.

Afraid to tell everyone, but happens at a lot of cemeteries especially after 9-11. Cemeteries in other states have told me that the state government will not allow them to give out information like in a bulk like fashion. So some will not allow photographs even. One cemetery in the Detroit area, I had tried and tried to get more info on a great great aunt. It was to far to drive just for that, and several people tried for me or said they would but finally after several months I found a person who's parents were buried across the drive from my aunt so with a letter from stating that I was asking him to do this for me he was able to get photos and the a copy of the burial cards as well. This is to cover, the cemetery behinds, in case someone would come along to steal an idenitity. So if you think about it there is just cause in their dilemma. So take it easy, approach them respectfully and state exactly what you want or need in writing so ! that they can have it for their files. Maybe someday the information will be there. By the way several stone information is listed at findagrave.com. Andrea

There are some indications that Dewey married after the 1930 census and did have a family but I don’t have much detail on them. What I do have is a lot of information on the Hockensmith ancestors and will summarize that here. As has been noted in another message, Dewey Clinton Hockensmith was a son of Charles Henry Hockensmith, b.4 Aug 1867, IN and Elizabeth? b. ca Jul 1877 in OH. Charles was a son of Levi Hockensmith b. 1837, Stark Co. OH, d.18 Mar 1870 and Mary Virginia Bechtol, b 22 Sept 1841 in Morgan Co, (then) VA, d.22 Jan 1919 in Wabash Co. IN. They were married 21 August 1861 in Wabash Co. Levi was a son of Jacob Hockensmith b.10 October 1803 in (probably) Mifflin Co, PA d. before Apr 1850 in Stark Co., OH and Julian Smith. They were married 7 March 1833 in Stark Co, OH. Jacob was a son of Peter Hockensmith b. ca 1774, Frederick Co, MD and Christiana Smith b. ca 1774. Christina was a daughter of John Smith who died 1807 in Bedford Co, PA and Mary Templeton (?) who died ca August 1832 in Stark Co, Ohio. Peter Hockensmith was a son of Jacob Hockensmith b. ca 1750 in (probably) Frederick Co, MD, died August 1818 in Frederick Co. and Elizabeth Smith b. ca 1750 d. ca 26 June 1834 Carroll Co, MD. Elizabeth was a daughter of George Smith d. 1793 Frederick Co, MD and Christina?. Jacob was a son of Conrad Hockensmith b. circa 1720 in Europe who immigrated to America in 1739 and died in Frederick Co, MD in 1795. There are indications that Conrad was in the French and Indian War. Jacob a member of the Maryland Militia in the Revolutionary War. I have lots of information to share and would welcome contact with anyone descended from, or researching, any of the individuals mentioned above. Peg Kwadrat Reston, VA

I called them a few years ago for the listing and was refused. One of our volunteers was going to walk the cemetery and create a listing, and the office told him he couldn't do that. So, that is all I know. I called the cemetery office one time trying to check a burial there for a query we had from the west coast, they wouldn't even tell me if the person was buried there. They said the person would have to fax them a letter and verify relationship and they would tell them if the person was there. Bear in mind, I just wanted to know if the man was there, I wanted no other information. They wouldn't give it. If anyone gets a listing, we would love to have it, and I know the Huntington library would love to have one also.

I have contacted them asking for a copy of their burials for the Marion Public Library's genealogy collection, and was refused. They stated that it is their policy not to give out information on their families, and even refuse to verify that someone is buried there unless you are verified to be a family member. I believe they have even stopped people from walking the cemetery and writing down names. The Huntington Public library does not have a listing either.
