His family is on the 1850 census. His grandmother was Peninah Boswell Bailey, an abolitionist Quaker and daughter of Ruth Bailey Boswell, the Quaker preacher that started the Stillwater Ohio meeting. Joseph, Peninah and Peninah's son, Levi all moved to Guthrie Center Iowa and Peninah is buried there in a Quaker cemetary. Joseph joined the Union effort during the Civil War there and eventually was discharged at Bird's Point LA. He eventually moved to Spokane Washington (by 1880) got married and had my grandmother, Betty Ruth Bailey. My family is now all near the Portland/Vancouver area. I cannot figure out from the census record who was Joseph's father. Also, if anyone knows this family better, please drop me a line. Thank you. Anne Bailey
