This SMITH family came early to VA, had large plantations, operated with slave labor. Fielding SMITH, our subject's father, married the daughter of Samuel CARPENTER, whose wife was a MIss BLANKENBACKER, both familes of German descent and farmers and slave-owners of VA. Fielding SMITH was a soldier in the war of 1812, active in public affairs, a Democrat. He died in 1829, at age of 36,, wife died in 1888, age 91...
