Louisa Aldine Clark/Clarke (b. Feb. 15, 1884, Kokomo, Howard Co., IN) married Ambrose Eldon Lindley (b. March 18, 1870) Aldine was my great-grandfather's half sister. Her birth record is listed in several Howard County books; sometimes the record spells her family name with no final 'e' and at least one spells it with the final 'e.' My great-grandfather and his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren all use/used the final 'e' on the family name. I have seen Louisa listed in other Clark/Clarke family genealogies as Louise Aldine Clark; her father's death announcements in the Kokomo papers list their last name as Clark and her name as Aldine Clark; her high school yearbooks list her name as Clark; her father's tombstone lists the family name with the final 'e;' another Lindley researcher told me that their records list her name with the final 'e;' in my grandfather's family Bible her name is listed with the final 'e.' So, the spelling of her last name seemed to be quite inconsistent! I spell is with an 'e!' Aldine's and Ambrose's marriage took place for certain after July 17, 1920 (the date of her father's death), since we find her listed under her maiden name and living with her father (Cyrus Higgins Clarke/Clark, b. 9-20-1845; d. 7-17-1920). It probably took place about 1825. In a text written by the Howard County Genealogical Society (Kokomo, Indiana) entitled "Howard County, Indiana Family History 1844-1994," (Paducah, KY: Turner Publications, 1995), p. 246, this family is discussed. It reports that the death date of Sarah Jane Lindley, Ambrose Lindley's first wife, was September 11, 1917. It then states that their daughter Doris quit school at the time of her mother's death to take care of her infant brother James Robert until she married five years later. Three years after Doris' marriage, according to the text, Ambrose married Louisa Aldine Clark (sic). Based on this information, we could calculate their marriage date to be eight years after Sarah Jane's death in 1917, thus, about 1925. Ambrose's first wife was Sarah Jane Lennington (d. 9-11-1917). According to both the family history book referenced above, and the "Howard County, Indiana, Index to Marriage Records 1844-1920" (vol.II Letters H to O Inclusive), Sarah Lennington and Ambrose E. Lindley were married in Howard County on June 2, 1894. Note: the index transcriber could not decipher Sarah's last name and thus it is included in that reference as Sarah "L??ington." This index was created by the Indiana Works Progress Administration (W.P.A.) in 1939. The original record is located in the County Clerk's Office, Kokomo, Indiana. The children of Ambrose Eldon Lindley and Sarah Jane Livington were: Samuel Arthur Lindley Earnest Lindley Mary Elizabeth Lindley Doris Winifred Lindley (b. abt. 1904-05) Wanita Lindley Amanda Almed Lindley James Robert Lindley This information comes from the family history text entry as well.
