Surnames: Bennett, Cohee Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Fi.2ADE/1118 Message Board Post: I'm not researching this family - I just found this article and thought it might be helpful. Kokomo Dispatch, Kokomo, Howard County, Indiana, Sunday Jan 31, 1926. Charles Bennett, a former resident of Greentown, and remembered by many of his friends here, found his brother, Benjamin Bennett, after a separation of fifty-three years. At the close of the Civil war, Ben left their home in Kentucky and went West and was never heard from again. After a few years Charles moved to Indiana, where he lived near North Vernon, and later at Greentown, where he had many friends and relatives. At the death of his wife, he went to California with his son, where they now live in San Diego. Upon going into business at that place they rented a suite of rooms at a hotel. About a month ago two men came and rented rooms just across the hall from them. Three weeks later one of the men lost his footing on the top step at the post office building and fell. He died a few days later in the hospital. Charles did not think much about it until one day while he was writing a letter to his grandson in Greentown, he happened to glance at a paper on which the stationery was lying and noticed the death of Benjamin Bennett. Upon Investigation, Charles found it was the same man who had lived across the hall and also that it was his brother, who had gone West fifty three years before. Mrs. Bert Cohee is a daughter of Charles Bennett.

I bought it on Ebay; it just has the insides, but it is full of Indiana biographies. I am not researching this family, just thought I would share. I do not know anymore about these families or these surnames. NOTE: I don’t know if there is any additional mention of this family in the book, it has no index. I do not want to sell this book. I am typing the biographies from it. Typed by Lora Radiches: Surnames in this biography are: Brown, Stack, Willcutts, Galloway, GLEN D. BROWN, business director of the public schools of Muncie, is a native of Indiana, and has been teaching and identified with other phases of educational work since early manhood. Mr. Brown was born in Howard County, Indiana, April 3, 1891, son of Grant and Delia (Stack) Brown. His grandfather, Jerome Brown, was a pioneer of Howard County. He was the father of twelve sons, Grant being the youngest, and nine of these sons were soldiers in the Union army during the Civil war. It is doubtful if any other single-family group in the state did more for the cause of the Union by participation in the army service. Glen D. Brown was educated in public schools in Howard and Miami counties, graduated from the Greentown High School in 1910 and received his A. B. degree at the Indiana State Normal School at Terre Haute with the class of 1916. He has also done graduate work at Indiana University. His teaching experience began in 1910, in rural schools in Miami County. In 1914 he we! nt to the West Terre Haute High School as an instructor and in 1916 became principal. Mr. Brown has had a part in the education system at Muncie since the fall of 1917. Through all these years he has been supervisor of industrial arts, his title since 1921 being that of director of vocational training. During the war he also did work as an instructor among the army units in connection with the educational work of Purdue University. In 1924, when Mr. Allen became superintendent of schools, Mr. Brown was given additional duties as business director for the board of education. He is a life member of the National Education Association, is a member of the Phi Delta Kappa educational fraternity, a past president of the Kiwanis Club, member of the Chamber of Commerce, Dynamo Club, and is a York Rite and thirty-second degree Scottish Rite Mason and Shriner, being a member of Murat Temple of the Mystic Shrine at Indianapolis. He is acting on committees for the Bo! y Scouts and Y. M. C. A. Mr. Brown is a Republican and is on the official board of the High Street Methodist Episcopal Church. He married at Kokomo, Indiana, December 24, 1916, Miss Suzette Willcutts, of Kokomo. She was educated in high school at Greentown. She is a member of the High Street Methodist Episcopal Church and is completely devoted to her home and family interests. Her parents were William and Emma (Galloway) Willcutts. Her father represented a pioneer family of Wayne County, where he grew up, and he lived at Knightstown, Spiceland, Carthage, and later at Greentown, where for many years he was a leading merchant. He spent his last years at Kokomo and finally at Sidney, Ohio, where he died in January, 1929. Mrs. Brown’s mother resides at Sidney. Mr. and Mrs. Brown have three children, Mary Ellen, Glen David, Jr., and Joseph Edward. Mary is in junior high school and Glen is in the grade school.

Surnames: BEARD,Reiser, Wheaton Classification: Biography Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Fi.2ADE/1107 Message Board Post: BEARD, CHARLES EDMUND (1900-1982). Charles Beard, airline executive, was born in Toledo, Ohio, on November 23, 1900, the son of Hiram Edmund and Mamie (Reiser) Beard. He received his early education at Lake Forest Academy. At the age of sixteen he convinced the United States Navy that he was eighteen and enlisted as a carpenter's mate. He signed up for aerial-gunnery school and graduated third in a class of 400. He then worked as an instructor at the Great Lakes training station as chief gunner's mate. After being discharged he went to Lake Forest College and the University of Toledo, where he studied English, journalism, and history to prepare himself for a career in newspapers. He then moved to Chicago to work as a reporter for the Chicago Daily News. This lasted only a short time because he tried to pursue a stage career in New York on what was at that time called the Subway Circuit. In 1922 he met Rose Ester Wheaton, a native of Kokomo, Indiana. He moved with her to Tole! do, Ohio, where he took a job working in a warehouse for eighteen dollars a week. Charles and Rose were married on February 23, 1923. In 1928 Beard left the warehouse, where he had risen to the office of sales manager. In 1929 he took a job as a consolidated ticket manager for the Chicago Air Traffic Association. He was called to New York in 1932 to organize a consolidated ticket office there. He was offered the job of passenger-traffic manager for Northwest Airways in 1933 and remained there until President F. D. Roosevelt restructured the existing airmail contracts and pushed the airline business into a slump. Between 1933 and 1935 Beard worked for Chevrolet at the Chicago Worlds Fair and for Goodyear Rubber. In October 1935 he accepted a job with Braniff Airways as general traffic manager. By 1937 he had become a vice president and a member of the board of directors and was in charge of all traffic, sales, and advertising. In 1943 he was made a member of a five-man executive committee established by the board. By 1947 he was executive vice president. He was elected president of Braniff in January 1954, following the death of Thomas E. Braniff in a plane crash. During his time as president Braniff Airways grew into a top-ten national carrier. Beard initiated flights to Latin America and South America and was decorated for doing so; in May 1957 he was given the Order of Merit (Peru), and in February 1960 he was given the Order of Balboa (Panama) for his contributions to goodwill between the United States and Latin America. He was given an honorary doctorate of commercial science by the University of Toledo in April 1964. He retired from Braniff in April 1965. Beard was also a director of the First National Bank of Dallas, a member of the executive committee of the Frito-Lay Corporation,qv and a director of the Lone Star Cement Company. He was involved in many civic groups, such as the Boy Scouts of America, the Texas Tourist Council, and the Southwestern Legal Foundation. He was director of the Air Transport Association for several years and president of the Air Traffic Conference. He was also a member of the Air Transport Committee of the United States Council of the International Chamber of Commerce. In 1955 he wrote a short profile of Thomas E. Braniff that was published by the Newcomen Society. He had a son and a daughter, seven grandchildren, and fifteen great-grandchildren. In September of 1963 his wife died, and he shortly thereafter was remarried to a second wife, Barbara. Beard died on July 18, 1982, in Dallas, Texas. I am looking for a connection to the Graf family in this county. I have not had much luck in the past finding anyone researching this family. I have a lot of names but no other information. The Graf's settled around Peru, Kokomo and Amboy (I realize not all of these towns are in Miami Co.) In the mid 1850's. If anyone is interested I have a web site that is still being completed, but has a lot of the information that I have on it. www.graff.iwarp.com If there is a connection I would really like to hear from you and exchange information. I'm looking for a W.S.(Scott) Williamson. Is there any way I can find out what "W" names may have been used in 1853? Any help would be great. Thanks Nancy [email protected]
Hello BUTCHER-"HUNTER"s: forgive the pun. My Sadona Butcher (1810-1895) moved to Howard Co from Decatur Co, 1850. Her son John Butcher(1843-1919) and Sarah Jane THOMAS m abt 1870 at Poplar Grove Brethern church and my grandmother was b 1878 in Young America, Cass Co. Interesting. They sure moved around. til they settled down in Erwin twp, Howard Co.! Anything more on Isaac? I think he is the son of w Sarah Love and William Butcher .
