Could you provide me the names of some of James and Nancy's children? A "James M. Brown," age 56, with wife Nancy J. (age 40) are listed on the 1900 Census for Boone Township, Harrison County, Indiana. Their children were: John, Ada, Minerva, Edward, Preston, & Martha Brown. The census indicates that James and Nancy were married in 1882. I located a marriage record for a "James M. Brown" and "Nancy J. Getz" who married July 16, 1882 in Harrison County, Indiana. Are these your ancestors? As I stated in my previous message, the birth/death dates you provided for your James M. Brown (1844-1901) do not match the information I located at the Corydon Library, but perhaps the dates are incorrect? The "James M. Brown" who was buried at Union Chapel Christian Cemetery was born in 1843 and died in 1902. He also has an obituary: CORYDON DEMOCRAT, March 19, 1902: --------"James M. Brown, an old soldier and respected citizen of Boone township, died, Friday, of dropsy, aged 58 years. He leaves a wife and six children. The funeral was held Sunday at Union Chapel and the sermon was preached by Miss Ida Hottle." His obituary clearly indicates that he is the "James M. Brown" buried at Union Chapel and NOT your James Mason Brown (1844-1901), assuming your dates are correct. There were several James Brown's in the county. I located the marriage return of the "James M. Brown" who married "Nancy J. Getz" in 1882. According to it, James M. Brown was the son of Benjamin Brown and Helen Able. James was 38 years old, born in Boone Township, and was a farmer. His wife, Nancy J. Getz, was 18 years old, born in Heth Township to Phillip Getz and Christena Wiseman. They were married at Nancy's house. "Benjamin Brown" married "Ellen Abell" on February 7, 1836 in Harrison County, Indiana. There was a "Phillip Gets" who married "Jessee Wiseman" on October 4, 1849 in Harrison County, Indiana. "Phillip Gates," age 56 was listed on the 1880 Census for Heth Township, Harrison County, Indiana with wife, Christena (age 56) and children, including their unmarried daughter, Nancy J. Gates, age 15. Ellen Brown, age 45 was listed on the 1860 Census for Boone Township, Harrison County, Indiana with children, etc., including James Brown, age 16. Ellen was a widow. She was still living in 1880 when she was listed as "Elen Brown" on the census; her son James was with her also. I am also descended from the Wiseman family, although I'm not sure who the parents of Christena Wiseman are. I hope this information is of some help to you. Please let me know if you find out the names of Christena Wiseman's parents. Jesse Stamper Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
