    3. I obtained printed records of my ancestor's, Henry and Willam Rafferty's marriages to Hancock family girls in 1845 and 1847 from the Harrison County Clerks's Office around 2001 and have them in my compilations. Washington County Historical Society also help me and my late mother's research, who sent me pages from the Harrison County Atlas showing the section of Blue River twp where my ancestors and other relations by marriage had land, plus the advice to write the Harrison county clerk and kindly sent me a page showing the marriage book reference numbers. She said there were no death records before 1882. ----- Original Message ----- From: <inharris-request@rootsweb.com> To: <inharris@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, March 26, 2010 3:00 AM Subject: INHARRIS Digest, Vol 5, Issue 25 > > > Today's Topics: > > 1. The situation is a bit convoluted. The subject, Daniel Lagle almost certainly came to Harrison Co. ca. 1826-7 when John Lagle Sr. ca. 1768-1837 left Rowan Co. NC. How long he stayed is a bit murky. This John Lagle and one of his three sons from his first marriage settled in Harrison Co. A second son initially settled in Floyd Co. (later Harrison) and the third remained in NC. They were members of the Bethel Church of the Brethern and I have already consulted those records. Daniel appears once in 1851. The problem mainly stems from the sudden death in 1837 from food poisoning of John Lagle Sr., his second wife Jenny, and a son from the second marriage also named John. This happened in Vermillion Co., IN. From these 1837 deaths * until 1850 I don't know what happened to the children from the second marriage (with one exception). The one exception, the youngest son James ca. 1825, turns up on a Bethel church record in 1847. Further in the 1850 census none of the children from the second marriage are living in Harrison Co. which appears odd to say the least. I should add that I am not the original researcher on this branch. So I can't be 100% sure what records were or were not looked beyond the ones I have looked at myself. * There appears to be no probative probate records. This may be because John Lagle Jr. left a son who inherited. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I believe some of the courthouse employees in the past have pitched some of the early, but not too important records, such as court docket books. Could you perhaps tell us the name of the person you are looking for? If you are trying to figure out when exactly he/she came to this county (or reached his majority), deeds, tax lists, and voter lists would be the best option, probably. Unfortunately, I don't know anything about the voter lists. I remember when I visited New Amsterdam awhile back, there was a small store, can't recall the name, that had copies of some of the early records of that town, including voter lists. They were quite interesting and I found the names of several of my McAdams and Mowrer ancestors on those lists. My ancestor, Samuel McAdams, Sr. (died 1824) was one of the founders of New Amsterdam. I suppose the town government would retain the voter records, but they may have been moved to the Harrison County Archives Building across the street from the Courthouse, I don't know. I have always wanted to go through the voter and tax lists. Perhaps some day I will. I believe the Corydon library has a book of the 1809 tax list and perhaps a few others, but not many. The library also has a published book consisting of early school census records which are very helpful prior to the 1850 census. I believe the book covers the years 1842, 1846 and 1847. Whether or not original school census records go back to the 1830s, I don't know. And as always, deeds are good at establishing a date of arrival, or at least a land purchase (or sell), in Harrison County, Indiana. Also, you said your ancestor apparently left no probate records, but depending on how important it is for you to establish a date of arrival, you can always check the probate records of this person's neighbors. It would be a time consuming task, but you never know, you may find out he purchased an item from his deceased neighbor's estate sale. I frequently find the names of several different ancestors and their siblings in old probate records I copy, especially when the person left a large estate consisitng of many farming tools and livestock. Usually they were friends, close neighbors or lived in the vicinity. Jesse Stamper Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. This person at various times gave his birth as early as 1808 and as late as 1833. The year of birth makes a huge difference in this case. Since there are no probate records that would help clear this up I am trying to see how early I can find him in a county record. Any record with a date in it will do. So what records from this period survive? I am thinking tax (non-property) and voter lists. I am fairly sure there was no land ownership. Thanks. 3. Hi! I do not have personal pictures of members of the Tindall family, but I do have a couple of cemetery shots and a couple of shots of the Tindall School in Harrison. These photos were taken by my Adams cousin, Chris Hood. I am descended from the Adams and Cotners.
