Hello, Below is an obituary for Matthew Michael WALSH who was born and died in South Boston, but lived most of his life in Taunton, MA. After the obit, I wrote a bit about the families close to him. The surnames included are: WALSH, DINEEN, EAGAN, DWYER, KENNEDY, HOYE, MANION, EDGERTON, KEYES, BUTLER, O'FLAHERTY, BRADY, CALLEN, DALEY, CUDAHY, Funeral Notice of Matthew Michael Walsh South Boston Inquirer South Boston, Mass. Saturday, August 13, 1904 Matthew Michael Walsh The funeral of Matthew Michael Walsh, one of South Boston's most highly esteemed and respected citizens, took place Monday morning at his home, 404 East Seventh Street. Although it was the desire of the family to have the funeral private, there were a large number of sorrowful mourners and friends present, and many beautiful floral tributes were received, demonstrating the appreciation in which the deceased was held. High mass of requiem was celebrated at 9 o'clock in the Gate of Heaven church. Rev. T. Brennan officiated. The church was crowded with bereaved friends and relatives, including some of the best-known people of the peninsular district. At the close of the mass "Calvary" was rendered by the church choir. Miss Mary O'Reily discharged the duty of organist. Mr. Walsh was a well-known labor advocate and was a recognized master at the machinist trade, one that he pursued many years with the most gratifying success. The deceased was also a naval (Civil War) veteran, having served gallantly on the "Old Macedonia," and an active member of the International Association of Machinists. Mr. Walsh is survived by a sister, four daughters and two sons. The burial took place at Taunton, Mass., the birthplace of the deceased. Notes to Genealogy of Matthew Michael WALSH, 1837 - 1904, his children, his wife, her family and his sister's family. Matthew Michael WALSH was b. 1837 in Boston, MA. He was baptised at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross, Boston, MA on October 8, 1837. Sponsors were: Matthew BUTLER and Mary O'FLAHERTY. Matthew's parents were: John WALSH b. ~ 1812 in Ireland (son of Matthew WALSH, Sr. of Waterford City and Bridget ---, of Ireland) and Ellen DINEEN b. ~1812 in Ireland, (dau. of Charles DINEEN of Ireland). John WALSH arrived in Boston in 1829 from Waterford City, Waterford. Ellen DINEEN may have arrived in Boston in 1841. Matthew's parents had one other child, Mary WALSH, who was baptised in the Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Boston (before moving to Taunton) on May 30, 1844. Sponsors: Patrick WALSH (who I think is the brother of John WALSH) and Judith Ann FLAHERTY. Mary WALSH m. Patrick KEYES in 1870 in Taunton, MA. Matthew WALSH m. Ellen Lawrence EAGAN, b. 1841 in Taunton, MA, parents of: Michael EAGAN II, b. ~1815 in Kilkenny, IRELAND (son of Michael EAGAN I & Catherine --- of Ireland) and Julia DWYER b. ~ 1824 in Ireland (dau. of Thomas DWYER of Ireland & Mary --- of Ireland.) Both the WALSH and EAGAN families lived in Boston by 1837, as I saw several baptisms in the families at the Cathetral of the Holy Cross in Boston (I also saw the DINEEN's, the DWYER's). At that time, I believe that John and Ellen WALSH had an inn in Boston. By the early 1840's, both these WALSH and EAGAN families moved to Taunton. While living in Taunton, a Mary BRADY always lived with John & Ellen WALSH, and were buried beside each other. I believe that Mary BRADY was John WALSH's sister, nee Mary WALSH. I also believe that Patrick WALSH was John's brother. And probably several more. In the 1860 Taunton, MA census, John WALSH and Ellen lived beside Mary BRADY (then 67), and her dau., Ellen CALLIN (40, wid.) and children: John CALLIN (16), Matilda CALLIN (18) & Margaret CALLIN (16). Matthew Michael WALSH and Ellen Lawrence EAGAN had children (all in Taunton, MA): --- Mary Isabel WALSH b. 1868, m. William EDGERTON --- Francis M. WALSH, b. ~ 1869, m. Sarah (Sadie) J. KENNEDY --- Julia A. WALSH, b. 1874 (didn't marry) --- Charles John WALSH, b. 1879, d. while single --- Ellen Alice WALSH, b. 1872, m. Mr. MANION --- Anna Louise WALSH, b. 1877, m. Edward DALEY. Michael EAGAN and Julia DWYER, (parents of Ellen Lawrence EAGAN who married Matthew Michael WALSH), had children: (--- Ellen Lawrence EAGAN b. 1840, m. Matthew Michael WALSH) --- Mary A. EAGAN, b. 1843, m. Martin B. HOYE of Taunton --- Michael EAGAN III b, ~ 1846, m. Martha; NJ, Indianapolis (below) --- Thomas EAGAN b. ~ 1847 (l. in Providence in 1895) --- William EAGAN b. ~ 1851 (l. in Providence in 1895) --- Julia EAGAN (2), b. ~ 1854, m. William J. EDGERTON --- James EAGAN b. 1844 - 1847 (l. in Taunton in 1895) --- John EAGAN b. 1842 - 1843 (may be d. by 1895) --- Julia EAGAN (1) b. 1848, d. young Michael EAGAN arrived in New York in 1834 from Rith Greene, Kilkenny. Michael EAGAN had a brother, John EAGAN (b. 1825, Ireland), who lived in Taunton as well. His brother m. Catherine CUDAHY. They had children: Catherine EAGAN -1856, Michael EAGAN -1858, Julia EAGAN-1860, John EAGAN -1864 and Mary EAGAN -1866. Both brothers lived in Taunton, MA. John arrived in New York in 1847 from Urlingford, Kilkenny. In the Indiana census in 1880, Michael EAGAN, III, then age 45, was living in Indianapolis. He lived with his wife, Martha, age 28, b. in New Jersey; and had children: James EAGAN 1875, Mary EAGAN 1878, and Francis EAGAN <1. In the Indiana census in 1900, Michael EAGAN, III was age 61, b. 1838, widowed; dau. Mary age 23, b. 1876, and son Francis L., age 20, b. 1879. Matthew Michael WALSH, father of Francis WALSH, above, who m. Sadie KENNEDY (b. in Nova Scotia in 1873, dau. of Michael KENNEDY and Mary ---) had three sons: --- Andrew F. WALSH (1/1893 in Taunton) --- Matthew F. WALSH (3/1894) in Taunton --- Harry A. WALSH (7/1897 in Taunton) In the Worcester, MA census of 1920, Sadie J. (Kennedy) WALSH was a widow, age 43; Andrew WALSH was out of the house and not listed; Harry A. WALSH was 22, single, (b. 1898); and Matthew F. WALSH was 25, single, (b. 1895). Finally, when Matthew Michael WALSH was age 62, widowed, he left his home in Taunton, and went to live with his only sibling, Mary Walsh (who m. Patrick KEYES) in 404 East Seventh Street, South Boston. The KEYES family lived before that in Springfield, MA. Besides Mary KEYES, Patrick KEYES and Matthew WALSH, they had children who were living with them in 1900: --- Mary F. KEYES (b. 1878) --- Elizabeth KEYES (b. 1880) --- James M. KEYES (b. 1885) Matthew Michael WALSH lived with his sister until he passed away in 1904. Matthew's funeral was in South Boston. He was buried in Brittania Street in Taunton, MA, beside his parents, John WALSH and Ellen DINEEN, his wife, Ellen Lawrence EAGAN, & his son, Charles WALSH. Beside them is Mary BRADY, (nee WALSH) his aunt. Misc: Ellen Lawrence EAGAN, wife of Matthew WALSH (above) stood up for two marriages in Boston: 1844 -- Cathedral of the Holy Cross -- Elizabeth DENEEN & John CHAMBERS 1829 -- Cathedral of the Holy Cross -- Ann DENNIN & Hugh RILEY These are probably sisters of Ellen DINEEN. Also: In 1845, same church, Patrick WALSH m. Bridget DINEEN. Perhaps brothers married sisters? Also: From Missing Friends, 26 September 1840. "Of Nicholas WALSH, a native of Johnstown, city of Waterford, Ireland. When last heard from, he worked on the Worcester Railroad, from whence he is supposed to have gone to the state of New York. Also, his sister Mary, who is married to John O'BRIEN, who was a contract on the Providence Railroad when last heard from. Should this meet their eye or that of anyone knowing them, they will confer a great favor on their brother Patrick [WALSH] by writing to him immediately to the care of E.{Ellen) and J.(John) WALSH, 17 Federal Street, or to the Pilot office." Also: I have some very old tintype photos of Michael EAGAN, Julia DWYER and Matthew WALSH and Ellen EAGAN. I have a photo of Mary Isabel (Walsh) EDGERTON in c. 1940.
There is also a book titled the Primitive History of Hamilton Co. Indiana. It is at the library at Indianapolis, Ind. and probably held also by the Historical and Genealogical Soc of Hamilton Co. In. Just thought I would off this above information. Patricia L. Hall Proud Sponsor+ of RootsWeb phhgene@aol.com
I'm looking for someone who has access to one or both of the following books: 1) History of Hamilton County, Indiana - 1880 (no author listed) 2) History of Hamilton County, Indiana - Her People, Industries and Institutions, by John F. Haines, published in 1915 by B. F. Bowen & Company, Inc., Indianapolis, Indiana If anyone has these, I am looking copies of any information on one George BOXLEY and his family (he is my gr-gr-gr-gr-grandfather). Thanks in advance, Jan Rader Kent, Ohio
Hi, Everyone I have a few family's that have married each other and have lived in Madison, Hamilton, and Hancock Co.'s in IN. The Faucett's and the McNutt's had Sara McNutt Goldsmith, Bob McNutt, and Eliza McNutt Faucett married Thomas Faucett. Sara McNutt Goldsmith is listed on a home page in Family Tree Maker, "Ancestors of Ruth Ellen Noel". Her sister's and brother's are listed as: Mary McNutt (m. Jonathan Lister), Sara McNutt (m. Thomas Gardner Goldsmith), Nancy McNutt, John McNutt, Anna McNutt (m. Robert Webb Budd), Olive McNutt. But no Eliza or Robert. Thomas Faucett had some brother's and sister's also: Sidney Faucett m. someone named Harter, Jane Faucett m. Martin Lunsford, Nancy Faucett never wed., Robert Faucett, and John Faucett. A son is born to Eliza and Thomas and they named him, James Henry Faucett. James m. Mary Elizabeth Merrill at a very young age (Mary's age) Mary's uncle James S. Merrill signed for Mary, at this point where is her father, William Merrill. William had a brother and sister, James S.Merrill, Hulda Merrill. Hulda was married but know one could remember his name. Mary's mother was Susanna Shull and William Merrill married in 1853, Mary was born in 1854 and by 1856 they were divorced. I believe William may have remarried a woman named Lucy Know. I know that Susan married a man named Charles Doty. William's parents were John Merrill and Nancy Gardner Merrill. Nancy's family was from VT, Nancy died in 1834 and John remarried a woman named Louisa Allen. John's father was Joseph Merrill, John was an only child. Nancy's brother Archibald Gardner brought James S. Merrill to Fortville in 1837. The Merrill's and the Gardner's lived in Franklin Co., IN when they first came to IN. The Shull's I'm not sure when they came to Hancock and Hamilton Co., IN. The Faucett's so far I have only been able to place them in Hancock Co. The McNutt's I find in Hamilton Co. For some reason, Mary Elizabeth Merrill and James H. Faucett got married twice once in 1870, in Hamilton Co., and then in 1882 in Hancock Co. Anything anyone would remember and/or have seen please help me put these families together again. Karen in IN
I need a copy from a history book of Hamilton County, and I'm not sure what the book is called. I know it is NOT the "History of the Formation, Settlement & Development of Hamilton County, from the Year 1818 to the Close of the Civil War", by Augustus Finch Shirts. The book I am looking for has at least a few pages on George Boxley. If anyone knows what book I am talking about and would be willing to make a copy of these pages, please let me know. I'd really appreciate it. Thanks in advance, Jan Rader Kent, Ohio
I am new to this list and researhing these families. They are primarily from Clinton Co., IN, but some may have migrated to neighboring counties. My husband's mother was a McClain. Thanks, Donna Brock McDermit

Robert, Mickey et al, Peter Martz married Christena Myers in Pickaway County, Ohio about 1808. He fought in the War of 1812. The family moved to Fayette County, Indiana about 1817. They had 12 or 13 children and each of their surviving children had huge families. Their twin sons took land grants in the area which is now Arcadia, Hamilton County, Indiana. As late as 1959, the Martz family reunions (usually in Noblesville) were attended by hundreds of people. Now, a scant 40 years later, it is hard to find a Martz descendant who is involved in their family history. Two booklets about the Hamilton County families have been circulated. One is the "Genealogy and History of the McCormick and Martz Families" by M. C. Martz of Arcadia published by Butler Printing House of Noblesville, Indiana in 1927. The other is more a collection of lists put together for the 1959 family reunion. It was signed off on by Eugene Donald Montgomery, President of the reunion association. I assume that Donald Montgomery is a descendant of Stillman C. Montgomery, a distinguished Civil War veteran who married Eliza Ann Martz. According to the 1927 history, "The Martz family is of German origin and was first represented in America about 1700." This history describes Nicholas Martz (b. 1762 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania) as the father of Peter Martz (1789-1872). I am interested in exchanging information with anyone who might have information about the family of Peter and Christena Martz. Frank L. Myers
