[Transcribed on January 24, 2008 by RLJ from microfilm of the original newspaper on file in the Bloomfield-Eastern Greene County Public Library.] Sarah Ann MASON was born in Bloomfield, Indiana, on July 20, 1859, to Thomas R. and Marietta WILLIAMS, and passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Walter JONES, in Carbon {Madison County, Illinois}, May 4, 1939, aged seventy-nine years, eight and one-half months. Her girlhood days were spent in Bloomfield where she attended school until she graduated after which she taught in the public schools of Greene County. On July 27, 1884, she was united in marriage to Jesse B. MASON, a railway postal clerk, also a native of Greene County. For a time they made their home in Switz City, later moving to Sidell, Illinois, where they lived until Mr. MASON resigned from the mail service. Returning to Greene County, they purchased a farm in Grant Township where they made their home for a number of years, Mr. MASON later being appointed postmaster at Switz City. He passed away July 29, 1918. Coming from a Christian home, she united with the Methodist church at an early age, and remained a firm and devoted member throughout life. In every field of the church she was a faithful worker, willingly carrying her share of the burdens. In the home, the church, and the community her Christian influence has been a guide and inspiration to all who knew her. She had the gift of seeing the good in all things. All the beauties of nature appealed to her in an unusual degree. In each flower and tree she recognized the handiwork of God. Much of what interested her most she expressed in verse, and often entertained and delighted her friends with her gift of reciting. Her life was full of service for others. Surviving are three daughters, Marietta JONES, of Carbon; Lydia Ellen GASTINEAU, of Switz City, and Mildred Owen, of Worthington; three grandchildren, Harriett Ann, Robert and Sherman GASTINEAU, of Switz City; one sister, Mrs. John A. CRAVENS, of Worthington, and two brothers, Morris WILLIAMS, of Bolivar , Tennessee, and Hoyt WILLIAMS, of Detroit, Michigan. We, who knew Mrs. MASON, feel that she is not dead. "Her hand is gone; her voice is stilled, for that is what the Master willed, but this can never take away the life she lived from day to day; the quiet goodly things she did which from the world were hid. Like waves from a pebble dropped in a pool was her good work throughout life's school. She is not dead; it can't be true, for she lives on in me and you." - We wish to express our sincere thanks to our friends for their expressions of sympathy and their many acts of kindness at the time of the death of our beloved mother and sister, Sarah Ann MASON.
