I worked in Greene County in mining and no one knew anything about the "town". I looked at land records and cojuld find no one named Sponsler who had owned land around there either. My great grandfather Richard Sponsler owned land up around Midland in the 1860's so it isn't named after him. I do not know when it got the name either. Like your relatives, I am finding it difficult to find out much about my great grandfather's ancestry. I have info on Sponslers of Sullivan and Martin counties as well, if I can be of any help.
