In a book entitled Indiana Place Names: "Founded in 1889 and named for William Sponsler who owned land here when a railroad stop was established." Also,there is a monument to Thomas-Martin-Sponsler families in row 10 of Fairview Cemetery, north of Linton, IN. That's all I know. Sorry.
