While in his teen age, and having a desire to see other parts of the country, during the covered wagon days he went with some relatives to Kansas. After a short time in Kansas, his desire for seeing more of the country and seeking better opportunities and a different climate, he went to Wisconsin and for a few months worked in the timber. Still possessed with that roaming disposition he went to California and again worked in timber. Not finding California his ideal state, he went to Oregon and homesteaded and improved a tract of land, at that place he lived 52 years. That section of Oregon was very sparsely settled, was heavily timbered and inhabited by deer, bear, buffalo, and other wild game and the streams stocked with fish, all of which was pleasing to his fancy. In the summer he gardened and prospected for gold and in hunting season he trapped and fished. Truly he was a typical mountaineer. He never was married and lived a lonely life. During his many years in the west, he visited his native state twice. He appreciated getting letters from relatives and friends and as there was not way of transportation he walked seventeen miles for his mail and groceries. In 1937 his nephew, Ed HORN visited him and found him in very poor health. Being so far from medical aid and relatives, plans were made and carried out and the nephew went by automobile and brought him to Indiana. He was given the best of medical attendance and a home and board provided him with his sister, Mrs. Tom SPARKS and Mr. SPARKS. In a short time Mrs. SPARKS passed away and this sympathetic generous hearted nephew removed him to his home in Illinois, where he was admitted to the St. Joseph Hospital in Joliet, Illinois. This nephew deserves much praise for his devotion and untiring interest in his aged uncle. The body was prepared for burial in Illinois and accompanied by the nephew, was brought Wednesday to the Lehman Funeral establishment where it lay in state until Friday, then brought to Ashcraft Chapel Cemetery for burial. - Link to the Obituary of his father, Sampson HORN [1837OH-1919IN]: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.indiana.counties.greene/3107/mb.ashx - Link to the Obituary of his mother, Julia Ann Adeline (HARDESTY) HORN [1845OH-1923IN]: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.indiana.counties.greene/3680/mb.ashx - Link to the Obituary of his brother, Steven Austin HORN [1865IN-1936IN]: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.indiana.counties.greene/5026/mb.ashx - Link to the Obituary of his sister, Rachel HORN [1878IN-1935IN]: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.indiana.counties.greene/6015/mb.ashx - Link to the Obituary of his brother, James Frank HORN [1882IN-1949IN]: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.indiana.counties.greene/5996/mb.ashx - Link to the Obituary of his nephew, Edward S.
