In 1900, my ggrandmother, who was 16 years old at the time, migrated with her many siblings and parents from Birmingham Alabama to Linton Indiana so that her father could work in the coal mines. I'm sure that many miners with large families, migrating in from Ohio, Alabama, and other places had no money for train tickets so had to use their own legs and a wagon. On the other hand, my husband's ggrandfather was a telegrapher for the railroad so that family had the luxury of traveling on trains, as well as owning railroad stock.
