Surnames: DOBSON, KIRK, SHERROW, SLAVEN Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Ci.2ADE/4655 Message Board Post: THE BLOOMFIELD NEWS, Bloomfield, Greene County, Indiana, Thursday, November 2, 1961, Volume LXXXVII, Number 4, Page 1, Columns 7 & 8, “Father, Daughter Killed In Automobile Accident.” [Transcribed 29 Jul 2002 from Bloomfield-Eastern Greene County Public Library’s IHS Microfilm Records.] A 22-year-old Bloomfield man and his little daughter were killed in an automobile accident 5½ miles east of here early Wednesday morning. Dead are Billy Ray KIRK and his daughter, Vickie Lynn, age 2½ years. The mother, Mrs. Judith Ann (DOBSON) KIRK, is in critical condition at the Freeman-Greene County Hospital in Linton as a result of injuries suffered in the wreck. Her condition this morning is still critical and she remains unconscious. The young couple and their daughter were traveling in a 1958 Mercury 4-door car on State Road 54 east of Bloomfield at the time of the accident. Their car left the road, crashed through a guard railing and plunged over a steep embankment. Mr. KIRK died instantly, and Vickie Lynn died at 5:25 o’clock yesterday morning in the Linton Hospital. Trooper George CAMPBELL and Deputy Sheriff Dale HORN, who investigated, said that the wreck was found by a truck driver who noticed that guard posts along the highway had been knocked down. Trooper CAMPBELL said the car had swerved off the highway, knocked down guard posts, gone over an embankment, and hit a tree. Mr. KIRK and his daughter were thrown from the car, and Mrs. KIRK was found unconscious, still in the car. The vehicle was completely demolished. Mrs. Nit WHITE told officials the KIRK family had visited with her at her home near Elliston until about 10:00 o’clock Tuesday night. When they started to leave, Mr. KIRK found that his car wouldn’t start, and they had to have a booster charge put on the battery before the motor would start. Cause of the accident has not been determined, but one theory was that the family had driven east of Bloomfield to charge the battery on their car. It still has not been determined how long the family had been at the scene of the accident when the tragedy was discovered. Mr. KIRK was born August 4, 1939, in Washington, the son of Ralph Houston and Wilma Lucille (SLAVEN) KIRK. He graduated from Bloomfield High School with the class of 1957, and was employed by the Holland Dairy here. He is survived by the wife; his parents of Bloomfield R. 2; a sister, Mrs. Jerry SHERROW, of Bloomfield R. 4, and three brothers, Larry, Donald and Gary KIRK, at home. Also surviving are the grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry SLAVEN, of Washington, and Mrs. Myrtle KIRK of Petersburg. Vickie Lynn KIRK was born March 1, 1959, at the Freeman Greene County Hospital in Linton, the daughter of Billy Ray and Judith Ann (DOBSON) KIRK. She is survived by her mother, the grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph KIRK, and Mr. and Mrs. Vernon DOBSON, and by the great-grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry SLAVEN, Mrs. Myrtle KIRK and Mrs. Ora F. DOBSON, of Bloomfield route. The bodies of Mr. KIRK and his daughter will lie in state at the Jenkins Funeral Home here until Saturday afternoon. Funeral services will be held at the Solsberry Methodist Church at 2 o’clock Saturday afternoon, and burial will be in Grandview Cemetery. The double services will be conducted by Rev. Paul MILLS and Rev. James BASTAIN.
