Surnames: BROOKSHIRE, COURTNEY, HINDMAN, OWEN, WESNER Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Ci.2ADE/4490 Message Board Post: THE BLOOMFIELD DEMOCRAT, Bloomfield, Greene County, Indiana, Thursday, June 27, 1912, Volume LI, Number 25, Page 8, Column 4, “DEATHS —Henry Clay OWEN.” [Transcribed 19 April 2002 from the original newspaper on file with the Recorder of Greene County, Indiana] The following from the Washington Herald tells of the death of Henry Clay OWEN, a prominent man and former resident of Greene County: “Henry Clay OWEN, aged seventy-two, veteran of the Civil War, former postmaster at Newberry, an ex-county commissioner and justice of the peace of Greene County, died at 6 o’clock Wednesday evening at the family residence, 313 South Meridian Street. Death followed an illness of nine months from a complication of diseases and was expected. Mr. OWEN was born at Scotland, Greene County, November 25, 1839, and moved to Washington in 1910, from Newberry. He is survived by his second wife, and eight children—Charles OWEN, Victor , of Mississippi; Mrs. Lank WESNER and James OWEN of Newberry; Mrs. Lillie COURTNEY, of Linton; Mrs. Edward BROOKSHIRE, of Henrietta, Oklahoma; Clay OWEN of Bicknell; Norma Gertrude OWEN and John Dwight OWEN of this city. Two sisters also are left. They are Mrs. Bas HINDMAN of Newberry and Mrs. Jane WESNER of Windsor, Mo. A musician of considerable talent, Mr. OWEN was a great lover of music and organized several bands. As a member of COMPANY B, 24TH INDIANA VOLUNTEERS, he saw three years service in the civil war. Mr. OWEN was postmaster at Newberry for five years, and served one term as commissioner of Greene County. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, having been identified with that denomination fifteen years. He also belonged to the Ladies Circle, G. A. R., the Masonic fraternity and the order of Eastern Star. The G. A. R. Circle held its services at the residence Th! ursday. Short services also were conducted by the Rev. Hayden H. ALLEN, pastor of the First Methodist church. The body was taken to Newberry Friday for burial. Services there in charge of the Rev. P. S. MAY, pastor of the Newberry M. E. church, assisted by the Rev.
