Surnames: CARTER, COLLINS, FODDRILL, GRAVES, MARTINDALE, REED Classification: Death Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Ci.2ADE/4497 Message Board Post: THE BLOOMFIELD DEMOCRAT, Bloomfield, Greene County, Indiana, Friday, July 18, 1884, Volume XVI, Number 17, Page 3, Column 3, “A TERRIBLE ACCIDENT—A Boiler Explodes, Killing Three Men and Wounding four Others.” [Transcribed 24 Apr 2002 the attached article from the original newspaper on file with the Recorder of Greene County, Indiana.] The boiler of CARTER’S saw mill, in Popcorn, near little Cincinnati, exploded on last Monday evening and killed Wesley CARTER, and his son John CARTER, and Thomas GRAVES. William GRAVES’ leg was broken in two places, above and below the knee. John FODDERLY was wounded in the side—supposed to be fatal. John REED had a collar bone broken and a shoulder blade hurt. Geo. COLLINS was wounded severely in the head. The accident was caused by letting the boiler get dry and then filling it up with cold water. It was bursted into small fragments. A stone as large as a man could carry was thrown from the foundation 100 yards through a house. Callahan MARTINDALE was sitting in four feet of the boiler and escaped uninjured. Some of those wounded were some distance from the mill. — NOTES—RLJ: CEMETERIES OF EASTERN GREENE COUNTY, INDIANA, 1994 G.C.H.S., Center Township, Section 24 T7N R4W, Carmichael Cemetery, Page 70, Column 1: Row 13, CARTER, Wesley 2 Mar 1833—14 Jul 1854{1884}; CARTER, John T. 12 Oct 1859—14 Jul 1884; Page 69, Column 1, Row 12: GRAVES, William C. 66 Yr, 14 Jul 1884; Page 67, Column 1: Row 7, COLLINS, George, s/o W & M, 5 Oct 1863—24 Jul 1884; Row 9: MARTINDALE, Callahan 1858—1937.
