[Transcribed on November 27, 2007 by RLJ from microfilm of the original newspaper on file in the Bloomfield-Eastern Greene County Public Library.] Oliver Morton CORBIN was born in Greene County, Indiana, April 5, 1864; died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Edna BRITT, in Bedford, Indiana, May 5, 1941, aged 77 years and one month. Mr. CORBIN was one of 15 children born to Jesse and Delilah (JACKSON) CORBIN, who were pioneer citizens of Jackson Township, Greene County, Indiana and direct descendants of the lat Mr. and Mrs. James CORBIN, among the first settlers of Greene County, having come from the Blue Grass regions of Kentucky between the years of 1821 and 1825, during the covered wagon days. Oliver Morton was brought up under the influence and teachings of Christian parents, in the fear and admonition of the Lord, and early in life obeyed the Master's call and affiliated with the Baptist church and lived a Christian through his life. As a young man he was morally clean, and it could be truly said he had not one bad habit, was a true model for his friends and associates, and was a favorite among the young people of the community. He loved music and was a talented singer. During his long illness he found much pleasure in his Christian friends calling, and singing and praying with him. One of his favorite songs was "Jesus Lover of My Soul," and recently when the writer was at his bedside and by request sang this song, and when his sweet tenor voice, clear and full of inspiration, joined the singing, it seemed the "gates of heaven" swung ajar that the angelic choir might hear his voice. About the year 1885 he was married to Miss Eliza POTTS, a schoolteacher of Dubois County and one of the most beautiful Christian ladies, with whom it has been my privilege to be associated. To this happy union two children were born, Everett and Bertha. In a few months Jesus came and took little Bertha to be His own. The family circle was broken, but a new one established in a home not built by hands, which made the way more bright for those left to mourn. In a short time the mother followed little Bertha, which added another link to the circle, and in October, 1940, when Everett passed away the third link was added, and in the death of the father May 5, 1941, the circle was made complete, never to be broken. On October 11, 1895, Mr. CORBIN was again married to Miss Nellie LEMON, of Bedford. To this union six children were born, three passing away in infancy. Mr. CORBIN was an industrious man toiling early and late, in good and bad weather, for years hauling stone by wagon and team (later a more modern way) for building contractors. Many homes and business houses were built by his labor, and almost every man in Bedford knew him, and he was held in high esteem for his honesty and friendly greeting. His friends were numbered by his acquaintances, and his friends keenly feel their loss as a Bedford citizen. Mr. CORBIN had been confined to his home for more than a year, and everything that kind hearts and willing hands could do was to on avail. During his long illness he never murmured, nor did he utter a single unkind word. Truly his children can rise up and call him blessed, and his many friends say, "This was a man." What a wonderful world this would be if all would live such a life! He is survived by the widow; three children, namely, Mrs. Edna BRITT, Mrs. Rowena VAUGHT and Mrs. Margaret SIMMONS; ten grandchildren, two brothers, William S. CORBIN, near Owensburg; James M. CORBIN, Clay City R. R. 2; one sister, Mrs. Frank HORN, Bloomfield Star Route, and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held Wednesday at 2 p. m. at the Free Methodist Church in Bedford, conducted by the Rev. BLACK and Rev. SHARP. Pallbearers were Virgil CORBIN, Jesse CORBIN, Elmer CORBIN, Homer CORBIN, Will CORBIN (nephews of the deceased), and Ray SIMMONS. Flower bearers were Mrs. Cecil ANDERSON, Mrs. Fred WHITAKER, Mrs. Mary SCHRUMP, Mrs. Byrle BEEMAN, Mrs. Dorothy GRETZAR, Miss Phyllis BRITT, Miss Sally NEW, and Miss Mildred CORBIN. The Ever Ready mal quartet of Bedford sang "Jesus Lover of My Soul," "In the Land Where We Never Grow," and "Going Down the Valley." Their well-trained soft melody was as a mother's lullaby to her babe. Burial was in the beautiful Green Hill Cemetery. "God has not promised skies always blue, Flower strewn pathways, all our lives through; "But God has promised strength for the day, Rest for the labor, light for the way, Grace for the trials, help from above, Unfailing sympathy, undying love." - We wish to thank everyone who helped in any way, for their kindness during the sickness and after the death of our loved one. Wes especially thank the ministers, the singers, those who sent the lovely flowers, the undertaker, pallbearers and flower girls.
