Born 9 May 1821 in Grayson Co., Virgina. Although I don't have a picture, he was described as being 5'7'' tall, dark hair, blue eyes. The Civil War Soldiers & Sailors System shows the following: James Phipps (First_Last) Regiment Name 1 Indiana Heavy Art'y. Side Union Company F Soldier's Rank_In Pvt. Soldier's Rank_Out Pvt. Alternate Name James W./Phipps Notes Film Number M540 roll 60 He was honorably discharged on 31 July 1864 in New Orleans, La. He was reported to have participated in the following battles: Baton Rouge, La - 5 August 1862 Donaldsonville, La - 24 sep 1862 Brasher City, La - 23 Jan 1863 An entry on www.gencircles.com states that he died in Lawrence Co., Indiana from gallbladder disease.
