Author: CaroleStClairGrant Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.indiana.counties.greene/1345.1350.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I visited Hicks Cemetery this week and if we are talking about the same cemetery, it is on CR275W just off CR200S. You can see the stone driveway go up a hill and out of sight as you approach driving down 200S. To get to Hicks take 231 West (54) out of Bloomfield to 57 S, turn left and go to CR200S. Turn left again and follow the road until it dead ends into 275W. You can't miss the cemetery. There is no sign marking it because this is an abandoned cemetery next to a fenced pasture, surrounded on three sides by farms. There are very few headstones left in the cemetery. With the exception of a very few, all of the headstones that are remaining are severely weatherworn and most are illegible. The headstones are broken or vandalized and many have been piled under trees. Many stones are lying on the ground, many of them sinking in the earth and becoming buried. I can't say how many burials were in the cemetery by my visit, but there are countless rectangular depressions everyone, and the ground is spongy under the feet. Someone has left artificial flowers on a few of the graves. I took pictures of the cemetery and all of the stones. I saw the names Sinclair, Keys, Gillett, Benham, Shepherd, Dugger, Sherrow, Shoptaw, Rampley, Hayes, Smith, Laymon, Day and Doyle. Other names were just too worn to read. I have Sinclair relatives buried there. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
